I am going to add a Ken King steering wheel and need to change out the existing stock wheel. Any tips on how to proceed? Did you have to use a steering wheel puller?
use your standard puller with 2 97-up gm puller legs... i got mine from mac tools. looks like 2 long J hooks.... :yesnod: i have heard of someone using 2 long bolts with nuts attached thru the holes in the wheel as there are no threads in the wheel
as Corvette184 mentioned, you'll need pullers, I got mine from Napa, but you'll also need the GM legs and the wheel does not have threaded holes for bolts.....but before all that:
you'll need a #27 torx to remove the 2 screws from the back of the air bag.....please be sure to disconnect the battery prior to doing so and let the car sit for a short period of time....I also for extra safety, kept my head, etc outta direct airbad impact, in case something happened
after the airbag is off, you'll have 3 wires, the ground, the horn wire and a thick yellow wire for the airbag, there's a specific order to disconnect but I start with the airbag 1st, then pull the horn and ground wire (reverse for assembly)....once all that is off....
it's time to remove the retaining nut, which I believe was a 21mm, but I don't recall for sure, sorry :(.....after the nut is removed, use the pullers and off she'll come.....some people have had issues with the wheel being stuck, so some penetrant left sitting for a bit may help but if you use wd40, please use gloves
reassembly is easy....press the wheel back on, install the nut, reconnect the wires, press the #27 torx into the back of the air bag and press the airbag into the steering wheel....don't attempt to screw them in from the back, it won't work
also, test the horn prior to fully pressing the airbag into the wheel :)
I'm taking mine to 21st Century MC when my wheel arrives. Some things I won't mess with, and for me the cost of tools and the cost of the labor will pretty much be a swap.
For those of you that attempt this on their own, I am truly humbled!
Just did mine last week...except my steering wheel puller wouldn't work...so I ended up pulling very hard to get old steering wheel off...it can be done (just have to break that loctite!
Also, on reassembly, use loctite where GM did (you'll see red residue)...

under $20 for the puller and #27 torx is a couple of $$$, the rest is standard garage tools :)......and about an hour install to reassembly at max, and that's for a novice :D....but I know what ya mean :D
