BE CAREFUL if you do the rear shocks! The lower rear shock bolt (Big one, believe it is a M16) is a pass through the arm and you'll find torque values stated as 167 Ft Lbs at most places online and in the shop manual but that value was revised to 107 Ft Lbs a few years later according to a GM tech my buddy called after we broke it! So much for having the factory torque specs handy! That sound of a "crack" instead of the torque wrench "click" was such a bummer. But at least we didn't strip something or damage something that is not easy to fix, once you source the bolt!
If you torque those bolts to 167 Ft Lbs, majority will BREAK. after the dreaded "crack", l called VetteNuts and he had them. What a great dude! He knew exactly what happened when I told him I broke one and sent a replacement bolt and nut to me for just the shipping cost! I added a couple of bucks and he said, as long as you come back if you need something, you just cover the shipping and I get ya the bolt to get your car going again-Class Act!
Those bolts are discontinued by GM so you either have to buy used or source some new ones from some where. The grade is 9.8 and it is a M16 ~4 inch long for that bolt-
I found a couple used on eBay and ordered them just for future needs by me or some other person!
That's weird, I haven't seen this as a common issue. Mine have been r/r'd at least 4-5 times with no issues in the past 5 years. That's cool of VetteNuts though for sure
"Note: When tighten the new bolt to factory spec, The nut must be held secure and the torque should be applied to the bolt head only."
These bolts were discontinued by GM and I could not find any new 9.8 grade stuff anywhere. I just bought another used set off an 04 to have as spares and YES, VetteNuts is awesome.
