GOTTA 2001 C5 GOT MY HEADERS, DONT KNOW IF I SHOULD GIVE IT A SHOT OR FIND SOMEONE TO INSTALL THEM. HOW MUCH WOULD I PAY FOR LABOR IF I LET SOMEONE DO IT THANKS MEGA1
It's an easy job if you have access to welding. You will need to cut the old exhaust just before the cats so you can weld in the new cross over pipe. You will also have to remove the valve covers and jack the motor up on the passenger side to allow the header to drop in. It's not as bad as it sounds!
If you do have a shop install them it's only worth $ 200-400.00
SO THEY BOTH INSTALL FROM THE BOTTOM. I AM NOT GOING TO USE THE CATS. I WILL MAKE AN OFFROAD PIPE. BUT IS THERE ANY THING ELSE BESIDES VALVE COVERS THAT HAVE TO COME OFF. HOW LONG USUALLY IS THE INSTALL. THANKS AGAIN MEGA1
No they both install from the top! On the drivers side you need to disconnect the steering knuckle out of the way (13mm) be careful not to spin the steering wheel and loose the alignment. I suggest you lock the steering wheel before you remove the knuckle. If it moves the PCM will trigger codes. You also should remove the oil filter to help the headers clear. The starter can stay in place. Disconnect the battery! You only need to jack the pass. side motor mount about 3/4" inch. Just remove the 18mm nut that holds the motor mount to the crossmember and jack the motor from the oil pan (pass side). Use a 2x4 between the jack. If you don't already have an X-pipe I would install one in place of the cats.
The whole install should take 4 hours if you stay on track!
THANKS ALOT!!!!! I AM GOING TO START IN THE AFTERNOON. DOES THE CAR NEED TO BE JACKED UP IN THE FRONT. ONE LAST THING. I HAVE A CORSA X-PIPE SO I WANT TO DELETE THE CATS AND INSTALL A PIECE OF PIPE. CAN I DRIVE IT TO A SHOP TO WELD"WIDE OPEN". SHOULD I DRAIN ALL THE OIL BEFORE REMOVING THE OIL FILTER? I KNOW I SOUND DUMB, JUST NEVER WORKED ON A VETTE. DONT WANT TO MAKE AMEATURE MISTAKES, THANKS MEGA1
I've probably installed 8 sets of TPIS and have never removed the oil filter, starter, or jacked up the motor. I install the drivers side from the bottom (yes, you do have to disconnect the steering knuckle), and I install the passenger side from the top (I remove the valve cover).. pretty easy job.
