Default Scan Tool Question

What’s a decent budget scanner that will actually display the live misfire counts per cylinder. My typical obdii will not display this. I know the tech ii will. Just wanted to see if anyone came across any other decent options to view more in depth data. Ona budget of say $600.

I had an accident, broke my leg and retired from my Submarine Rep Job in Groton CT. Had to get my house ready to sell, then move ALL my stuff and cars to El Paso, TX. I also had to sell a second house we had (rented) and had to evict the tenants, (in the middle of COVID). The house was destroyed by the renter. MAN WHAT A FRIGGEN MESS!!!! , Had to spend 3 months flipping it and then selling it IM. DONE WITH CT AND THE NORTH EAST!!!!!!
Once back in TX, I spent months relaxing, enjoying family/friends and doing stuff I wanted to do. I saw an interesting post that I decided to reply to and IM BACK. I helped someone today that was truly at the ropes end with their C5. No crank, No IPC, no nothing but the little yellow security light. New Ignition switch, and cylinder, I helped them take a reading with the volt meter in the IPC fuse. It read 3.0 VDC. LOL! Immediately told them grab the two connectors that plug into the ignition switch and with the key in the CRANK POSITION, wiggle the connectors. The engine tried to crank! Another case of spread female pins in the connectors. He is working on repairing the female terminals as I wright! After the repair, he will have his car back in time for a special event. Its great to be back.

If you only need it for your corvette then one good way to go is to get the vxdiag vcx nano gm. It performs most of the functions of a tech2. It just needs to be connected to a laptop. Also the are many cheap obd2 scanners that can read the enhanced data. Autel makes one, Ml519 for about $60 or the launch crp123 is a little more but it does all the systems of the car.

Another vote for the Autel Maxi. Great versatility and probably the cheapest bi-directional scanner you can buy. Then again...if thats all you need to do...you aint got no homeboys with a big boy scanner? I ask because 500 budget is more up the "will be using this often" alley like if you wrench often or have a fleet. Not discouraging the purchase, but if you aint scanning much...keep your cheap one and just pay $50 bucks for someone to scan for you with the data and parameters you want. I know dudes that will do it for a six pack

+1 to see Bill back. He is the man on c5 electrical. I use the launch and it works great. It is a good bidirectional scanner. For the c5 either is fine. I got the launch because it was able to show the porsche over Rev report on my gt4; which is non interesting for this forum.

Sorry to bump this, I couldn’t find my answer searching.

Will the Autel MK808S allow me to turn on TPMS functionality for my ‘04 C5Z? I would like to add TPMS ability since the car came from the factory with this turned off. If not, I can have the dealer do it with a Tech2.

Thanks!

As far as I know (had to do this on my 02 Z), You will need the GM TECH2 to communicate with the BCM to accomplish this procedure. All of the TPMS functions are in the BCM.
. I've herd stories of dealers refusing to do it because of liability concerns. You should be able to find another Corvette C5 person in your area that will help you with use of their TECH2. IF YOU LIVED CLOSE TO ME, IDE LEND YOU A HAND and program it in to your BCM.

If you take the procedure to a dealer, they MAY do it for you. Be prepared to pay at a minimum, 1 hour labor!!

Like I stated, I personally would look for a friend with a TECH2 close by who is willing to help. Where do you live?

Maybe C5Diag can discuss if the scanners that he has and have had can communicate with the BCM Functions.

Bill

I never considered that dealers might not want to do it. I’m in San Jose, CA

Yeah,,, I actually herd from forum members that said stealer ships refused to do things like delete the F-45 Real Time Dampening so they could install conventional shocks and or add options to your VIN that it did not come equipped with from the factory.

You call and speak with the service advisor and heck, They may be hungry and do the deed. Check with different dealers in your area.

Hi Bill,

The Autel MK808S did end up working to activate the TPMS functionality on my ‘04 C5Z. It didn’t work at first so I just repeated the procedure 10x and it took. Thankfully I don’t have to pay $200+ at a dealer for this.
