Default Oil pressure gauge malfunction?

When I start my C5 Z06, the oil pressure gauge (both dial and digital) start at around 30 psi then immediately goes to 160 psi. The gauge also goes to max (80psi) even when I turn the key without starting the car. Since the car seems to drive okay, is this a sensor, or wiring issue? One suggestion was that it might be the oil pump. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?
Thanks as always.

It's most likely the sensor. The engineers at Chevrolet decided to put it in the most awkward spot, so you are going to need small hands and some creative extensions with a deep socket to get it out. I found a ball joint worked better than a knuckle joint on the deep socket.

Once you get it out, you're going to have to take your multi-meter to it and check its resistance. Out of the car it should measure around 240-250 ohms. At 40-80 psi (normal operating range) it should have been reading between 180 and 30 ohms. If it reads less than about 200 out of the car, I would tend to think it is shot. But since you are going to all the trouble to get it out, I would just replace it. They aren't very expensive, and if it isn't bad, at some point it will be since this is a very common issue. I'd just replace it.

Best just to remove the intake manifold.
When you replace the sensor be sure to replace the Secondary Air Injection Check Valve.

It's the sensor, if you pull the intake manifold to replace, add a small length of rubber tubing to extend the small vacuum line that connects from the intake manifold to the hvac controls.

D,

How do you install the little filter that comes with the oil pressure sensor? I noticed that there wasn't one in there when I pulled the sensor, but the OEM sensor comes with a little filter and I wasn't able to get it down the hole.

Z,
Thanks for the reply. When I bought the oil pressure sensor, it came with a little sleeved shaped filter. Is this needed for the C5?

I think the filter is for gen4 engines with active fuel management.
I've replaced my oil pressure sensor on my C5 and no filter.
