Was talking to Jerry Belanger, maker of Belanger headers and custom exhausts Friday about this very subject. We had a nice conversation and he shared a few insights he had gained over the years making x-pipes for Chevy's.
Here are my take-aways from that conversation. (Any errors or ommissions are mine.)
Look for a true "X" shape in the piping. Not one that is just 2 pipes with holes cut in the sides and welded together to connect. You want the "X" shaped cross-over so that the gas pulse actually crosses the path of the other gas pulse to create suction (a.k.a. scavenging).
The other thing he said to look for was keeping the X's pipe diameter the same or smaller than the rest of the exhaust piping to increase the velocity of the gas pulses to create suction.
Makes sense to me based on my experience and what little I know from working for a Natural Gas Pipeline. High pressure flows to low. You create high pressure by compressing gas to send it down the line to the low pressure or suction side of the next compressor or the burner tip.
He didn't offer any specific vendor rec's nor did I ask. Jerry also mentioned he doesn't making X-pipes anymore. I suggested maybe he should. ;-)
Based on the parameters he gave we should be able to find a product(s) that fit. There are a couple of manufacturers I can think of that make this style of x-pipe whose products is available from Forum vendors.
Hope this helps you pick one. Sure you'll be happy whatever you choose. My feeling is it doesn't "really" matter unless you're building an all-out race car and need to maximize every little thing.
I am also considering GHL's to replace the stock exhaust with A&A mod. I have a basic x-pipe that is clamped in. Should I re-use this one or go to one of the premium priced type of x-pipes like Magnaflow etc. With the stock exhaust I took the approach that any basic x-pipe will do. With the higher flowing GHL exhaust does the x-pipe selection become more improtant and do they differ very much?
I am running the Magnaflow X pipe with my GHL's and it sounds great. I cant compare it to anything else but I am satisifed with it. It is also what Shawn at LAPD recommended when he sold me the GHL's.

How is your cabin resonance? Can you talk to a slimmy without having to shout while cruising? :D
There is NO resonance...great V8 muscle sound without it being obnoxious in my opinion. Try do a search for sound clips or call Shawn at LAPD for more information. Good luck!

If she is, yeah, no problem, nice and peaceful in the car.
Excellent! The last 4 dates I've been on have all complained that can't hear anything. The XR-1s are enough to make your teeth hurt they drone so loudly
No resonance? I have the MagnaFlow X Pipe and GHL's and wouldn't consider going any other direction, BUT there is some resonance. You aren't going to get that deep V8 sound without some.
