Hey guys .. i have a 2001 vette c 5 .. i get a no crank from it on occasion .. its not the starter ..( first thing i checked ) it happens like this .. If the car sits for a while .. ill get in and attempt to start it .. i get no crank .. but i get all error messages .. ride control etc ..
but if i discontent the battery for like 30 seconds and reconnect it .. car starts and runs no issues at all .. battery is fully charged ad tested under 80 amp load ( the old battery load toaster ) . I also tried the unlocking the door with the key thing figuring the factory alarm . n/g the alarm works .. because lets say i leave the door unlocked but close it , then disconnect the battery and reconnect it .. when i open the door the horn blows .. and i can deactivate by either the key or fob , and the car starts no issue .
i used to do alarms and custom stereos back in the day so im a little proficient in repairs and this is definitely i think an electrical issue ..
Has this happened to anyone else ?? and what was the solution .. ?? Thanks
If you are seeing all those DIC messages and maybe your fuel gauge goes to E and maybe your coolant temp maxes out and your power windows don’t work you may have a serial data issue…the data line is the old GM class 2 single wire and if a power or ground back feeds on that data wire the car will either start and stall or you will have a no start…we see a lot of issues with the driver door module connector inside that accordion boot you see when you open the driver door…shake it a few times so you may restore a possible bad connection…if that doesn’t work there are some other things we can check.
It aldo may be the BCM, many forum members have had to replace the BCM, the first clue is that disconnecting the battery and then the car starts points to the BCM.
I went to take a nice weekend drive this morning, and after sitting for a little over a week, I get no crank either. Was reading this thread, so I tried disconnecting the battery, too. I didn't make a difference.
Here is what I know:
The battery showed 12.2 volts at the posts with my VOM, the DIC showed 11.7 inside the car. We are in a heat wave, and the car has sat in a hot garage for more than a week. I threw on the charger and got the battery volts up to 12.5, still no crank.
The cluster does it's sweeps, the fuel pump primes, the headlights go up and down and are not dim.
The security lamp is lit during the sweeps, then goes out leaving only CEL and Brake light on (E-brake engaged)
When I push the clutch while holding in start position, I hear the clutch switch relay engage and disengage as I repeatedly push and release the clutch.
The crank fuse #14 is good.
There are two additional relays that click in the passenger footwell when I turn to start and release when I fall back to run.
When I crank with the headlights on, there is no dimming, like there is no draw from the starter.
When turning the ignition switch to start, the message center in the cluster goes dark, but the CEL and brake stays lit, and all gauges go to zero. When I release, the gas gauges return to normal positions.
There are no rapid solenoid clicks like would happen when the battery is low.
The door chime stays steady and does not slow down or change pitch like when the battery is low.
The battery is a Diehard Platinum at 2 years old with less than 5000 miles on it.
Where should I be looking next? Any help would be much appreciated. Maybe OP can post more of his symptoms as we might both be looking at the same issue?

Better to start your post with a NEW one instead of hijacking this one…2 people with similar issues make it difficult to keep them separated !!…just copy and paste !!

The idea here is the OP will give more details as to what he has observed, tried, or has his issue been resolved, and how did he fix it if so. I can start another thread, but have had members chastise for not reading all related threads or searching for results, so either way..
But hijacking was not my intention. Sorry if OP feels that way.
This is not the OP’s feeling but ours..the OP is the “Original Poster” which is “engineer 891” and I’m sure he doesn’t care…it just makes all this less confusing !!
Hello .. the first reply I received was the best one ..I didn’t even realize but my windows didn’t work either before I reset the battery and when I watched the video.. I also realized I had moisture on my rug … therefore I’m ordering weatherstripping..to stop the water issue… if I do t do that , I feel the problem will just happen again… and now I’m looking into programming a new bcm … rock auto has ac deco for between 125-185 for factory unit, however they say it needs programming… that’s where I’m at now .. I haven’t had a chance to get deeper into it because the day job takes up a lot of my time… but I’m definitely on the right track… I appreciate all the help from this forum.. it’s a great tool to have in the box as they say !!

If your rug is wet especially passengers side and BCM you need to clean your windshield cowl drain or “utters”…video below !!
To Dainon, check cables at battery and starter, ensure they are clean and tight, you might have to replace the TDR it's the relay above the BCM. The TDR has 4 wires, red, violet, and two yellow wires, one of them has a black strip.

Ahh.. I see. At least checking voltages here will tell me if the problem is upstream to the dreaded VATS, or downstream to the starter. I'll start a new thread and post what I find. I just worried I had a BCM issue like OP, since the last thing I did after the car ran fine was wash it with my electric pressure washer. Being that I have no PCM or BCM codes, I think the issue is elsewhere now.

As it turned out .. it was the bcm … ordered one from rock auto and had it programmed.. problem solved ..also fixed other issues I didn’t know I had .. she drives like new .. thanks for alll of your help .. this is a great place to get good information!! Thanks !!
