Just when I need it the most, my Tech 2 starts going south. I continually get a "No Communications with Vehicle: Check Diagnostic Link Connector" error message on the screen. Has anyone come up with a fix for this? The Tech 2 DLC cable seems to leave a lot of room for problems with its ability to connect to multiple adapters. What I'd really like to have a one piece cable assembly with correct molded ends on it. That round spring loaded cable end designed to interface to other connectors is a disaster. Does a one piece molded cable exist? I really only need the one connector.
First make sure you have 12 volts on pin 16 at the DLC…if not check fuse 29 in the IP fusebox…that fuse powers pin 16…if good you may have a “communication” issue with the car…start with the fuse first…does the car start and run ??
C5 Diag....thanks much for your reply. It was late when I wrote my post and I can see now I should have included more information. The car starts and runs fine....I was chasing some error codes that I had in the HVAC module related to blend doors. There are times when the Tech2 works great and it allows me to monitor both input and output data from the HVAC and other modules. While working I intermittently start getting the "No Communications with Vehicle: Check Diagnostic Link Connector" message. There are times when it seems to go away when I wiggle the cable or reseat connectors (Tech2 cable where it connects to the Tech2 itself and where it connects to the OBD connector under the dash), and there are other times where it seems nothing I try will get it working. I have another generic OBD2 scanner that has no problems communicating with my car so I'm assuming that the problem lies somewhere in the Tech2 device or cable. The issue is not just related to the HVAC module...other modules such as TCS get the same error message.
The spring loaded connector at the end of the Tech2 cable where you can put on different connectors seems as if it could be a problem area just because of all the pins that have to line up just right. Both the cable itself and various ends that can be used don't appear to be very high quality. I found the cable pin out below on one of the Hummer forums in a post where a guy had similar issues. Unfortunately no resolution was posted (hate it when that happens!). I may check cable end to end connections with an ohmmeter to see if I see any opens or high resistance connections.
Oh, OK so with that info it looks like a cable then…I’m assuming it’s a “Chinese Clone” Tech 2 so that is some of the problems faced with these…a member on here the other day can’t find the “Service Bay Test” on his so I guess that par for the course !!
Just to kinda close this out, I did get my Tech 2 working today. Turned out to be a ground issue, but this time not on the Corvette! I was getting a 20 - 22 ohm resistance reading on two ground areas of the Tech 2 DLC cable. Pin 18 on the round connector (see below) had high resistance, and pins 4 and 5 of the OBD2 male OBD2 connector on the DLC cable both had high resistance. All needed the connections on that cable cleaned. I still maintain that a cable with that many mechanical connections is a recipe for disaster.
Special thanks to the guys on the Saab forums - many Tech 2 discussions among their members with some excellent advice. Here (below) is just one of their discussions. The site requires a very easy registration.
Once working, the Tech 2 really is a nice piece of equipment. Was a breath of fresh air to isolate my problem once the Tech 2 reliably worked again.
I have the Amazon cable on order that I mentioned in my original post. Hoping that it has the required pinout for the Tech 2 so I can the set the original cables that my Tech 2 came with in next week's garbage.
