Front Seal for Between Master Cylinder and Booster
Began the tear down yesterday to replace the booster in my 2004 corvette. Found the rod seal between the booster and master cylinder torn. Trying to locate one has proven to be difficult. Anyone know of a source for these?
Is that not part of the booster? I’ve gone through the parts manual, and it appears to be pretty detailed on the entire assembly of primary cylinder / booster / pedal hanger. Shows the gasket between primary and booster, but does not show a seal as separate.
So no one can source this seal? Seems like if this is the failure mode for boosters, I should make a mold and make these and provide them for sale. I can get a remanufactured booster for around $125 to $150 but its the pain the the butt installation that I'd like to avoid. Chime in guys, is this the vacuum leak failure for your booster? I started the car with, literally, the dogs rubber ball sealing the booster and was rewarded with a smooth idle. Ran the car for 5 minutes. The vacuum holding the ball onto the booster was very snug. Shut the car down and then pulled the ball off to a huge SWOSH, telling me the diaphragm and check valve are functioning properly. All I need is this seal.
Well thanks to Contemporary Performance in SWPA, I was able to source a used seal. Installed last night and put the car back together. One hour test drive and all is well. No CEL, no codes, ran perfect. All thanks to the dogs ball used to verify the booster itself was good, the seal around the booster shaft was my issue.
Excellent update! I checked every source I could think of and came up dry on a new seal — that said, any chance you could measure the critical dimensions of the old seal, on the chance it’s the same as some other booster, such as a C3 unit?
O.D. 2" / I.D. .745" / Thickness .210". Material is black rubber like. No spring on ID shaft seal area, just rubber. The seal I installed had a part number on it of HST18006229. I googled that and found a seal that the picture doesn't match the seal I have but I ordered it anyways. I want to see if it is a revision that will fit into the assembly. No dimensional data available on line so I'll have one in a few days to measure / assemble and verify fitment or not.
A part number! Excellent! Who did you order from, Best Parts Online?
If it comes in and is the right seal, people in the future will be grateful you posted the information.
GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE A MATCH. The seal I ordered through Best Parts On Line, HST18006229, is the exact replacement for the Brake Booster shaft seal for my 2004 Corvette. That being said, it would fit 1997 through 2013, should you have that nasty vacuum leak and troubleshoot it down to the brake booster. Hope this helps someone out there. It took me 6 weeks to finally find the cause and get the car running correctly.
