So a few times I pulled my e-brake when in park and the darn thing made this wicked pop noise. It has since happened a couple more times when engaging the brake. What is the deal? I tried doing a search and didn't come up with anything. :banghead: Thanks.
There is a ratcheting mechanism in the handle on the e-brake that grabs the cable. Mine makes the same popping noise occasionally. I noticed pulling the handle gently and not in a fast jerk motion seems to eliminate the problem.

I had the same problem a few times after I had the car for a few months. I switched to a slower pulling motion and the problem appeared to go away. My assumption was that when I was pulling quickly I was also pulling towards me and the popping noise was something in the console catching on the handle. Haven't heard the popping sound now for several months.
Seems like a ongoing problem. My 98 e brake never did work, even after the dealer adjusted it three times. Each time they had the car for two days. I gave up on them. You would think after paying that much for a car the ebrake would work and the steering column would unlock when you want it to.
This thread is for adjusting the emergency brake "drum" at the rear wheels. I corrected this popping sound which does come from the "ratcheting" mechanism at the brake handle. I pulled back the carpet near the handle. It is secured with velcro. Then I observed the mechanism and found that it was sticking and was slow to engage. So I cleaned it with WD40 and used some leftover Mobile 1 to lubricate it. It's been over two years since the adjustment of my brakes using the tech tip and lubricating the brake handle mechanism.
BTW, my emergency brake engages at halfway travel.
