Default TPMXS and a Magnet

I heard if you take a magnet starting on Driver left front wherl and moving sequentially to RF then RR, finally LR you can reset it after a horn toot each time.
I tried the magnet... NOTHING!

Are you just walking aroud the car with a magnet or are you using the DIC programming mode?

I thought you just had to turn the key to accessory and then go around the car with magnet starting with left front wheel and continuing clockwise. Did I miss a step?

You missed about 6 DIC button pressing steps.
I don't recall them off hand but, there is a procedure.

Also, take the car for a short drive to wake the sensors up before programming them with the magnet per the video instructions.

If you changed to Schrader sensors their rep told me magnet doesn't work on those. He said heir C5 sensors require the $10 reset tool you can get on Amazon.

I got my Schrader brand sensors from Tire Rack when I bought my tires last year. I had to stack a couple really strong neodymium magnets to get a strong enough magnetic field to get them to program.

Default TPMS Sensor Training Issue

My '98 is displaying the Service Tyre Monitor System error each start up. I can get the first three wheels the chirp the horn, but the last wheel LH rear won't register. I'm using a strong U shape magnetic that covers the tyre valve, each wheel registers within about 8 seconds.
Question is do these monitors go bad ? I'm guessing they do. Can they be repaired if you remove the tyre ? Do you replace the whole four at once ? I've read that 97 - 98 are different to 99 - 04.. Any help appreciated.

There are many threads about TPMS sensors which you can find in the Forum.

The ‘97-‘00 model years use one type of sensor and the ‘01-‘04 use another.

The ‘97-‘00 sensors are typically more expensive. These OEM sensors are no longer made but you may find some new old stock still available. If you find them, they will be in the $100 or more range each depending on the seller. Schrader makes a replacement for the OEM that multiple Forum members have reported success with.

The OEM sensors typically last many years but they have batteries and will eventually need replacement. If you have 3 out of 4 working, it sounds like you have a bad one. The OEM sensors are not made with serviceable batteries but there are detailed threads that describe how to replace them.

Thanks bookyoh, I've only had my 98 for one week and although its come from a loving owner (Alabama) it has some of those typical C5 electrical issues. The TPSM was not reporting any issues at first, but after I'd pushed the reset button (why I don't know) I now get the service message. Is there a specific part number that designates the correct Schrader unit f0r 97 - 98 that you know of ?

I chose to use new old stock OEM sensors when I bough new tires this year. The 12 year old ones that came out were still working so I am pretty confident I will have many years of service on these new old stock units. I went this route because Costco would only install customer supplied sensors that were OEM.

There are a number of recent threads that discuss the Schrader sensors and the $10 triggering tool needed. You can also contact a company like TPMS.com for application and triggering information.

Whatever sensors you go with, it is a good practice to trigger them before installing in each wheel in case there is a defective one.

NOS batteries have been sitting since they were manufactured. Not a good choice any more.
Something with relatively new batteries is a better choice today. There is a forum member that sells them, do some searching and you'll find them.

Amen and hallelujah... Also nice to know they're compatible and how they're triggered before they're sealed up inside the tire and pretty tough to get to.

There are also sellers on Amazon with compatible aftermarket sensors for both 97-00 and 01-04, though they pretty much universally require a trigger tool and will not respond to a magnet.
