On the way home from work I got on it from a stop sign. I caught a good shift, not a power shift, to 2nd ~5600 indicated, got a little churp, :D ran up to ~ 5000 in 2nd at full power, let up, eased it into 3rd and let it back down to the posted 55. :blueangel:
As I shifted to 3rd I heard a sound like a stone kicked up hit the under body pan. As I shifted to 4th I felt the shifter move from left to right about 1 inch as I engaged the clutch and applied a little power.
Further experiments indicate that in any gear between power off and power on the top of the shifter moves left or right about 1 inch. :cuss
I'm guessing I broke a motor mount.. :mad :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Re: Have you ever broken a motor mount???? (scool93535)
Sounds like the correct diagnosis to me. I've broken a few, but none in the Vette. Typically you break the driver's side mount, as that one is subject to the most stress.
Open the hood and have someone rev the motor. If it rocks to the right when revved up, you have a broken motor mount.

:iagree:
Broke the mount on my 67 Camaro. Did the same thing.
Open the hood & watch when you rev the motor.

Not on the vette, but in my 64' El camino, 72' El camino & 68' Camaro
Energy Suspension poly/ Moroso solid motor mounts/ chain have fixed those problems!

You're probably right.
An inspection turned up 3 lose bolts and 2 missing bolts in the housing that connects the torque tube to the bellhousing? :mad
Having just replace the clutch ~ 1500 miles ago, I have to take the blame on this one. I'm fairly sure I torqued those bolts to spec, which if I remember correctly said 47 #. So either I missed and didn't torque them or, 47 is not tight enough.
Re: Have you ever broken a motor mount???? (scool93535)
Never broken a motor mount, not even on my 396 or 427 back in the sixties, except for my 1950 Crosley in high school. 4 cyl aluminum engine with 3 speed trans. Wish I had it back.
