Default Rod bolt change

How hard is it to get the oil pan off with the motor in the car?

I want to change my rod bolts.

I have heard that it is not that difficult?

I'm not sure, i'll be doing a writeup on this as soon as I can afford rod bolts. If you wanna do it at my apartment maybe I can document it for my page using your car?

Just out of curiosity, why are you changing the rod bolts? On stock motors, I don't think I've ever heard of them failing?

Thanks!
Sam

I have a set of ARP 190,000 psi rod bolts that fit the stock rods. I have heard that you can change them with the engine still in the car. I will take $70 for them and I'll pay the shipping. They are still in the sealed package, I was going to use them but have changed my mod plans. Let me know if you guys are interested Nate

I am changing them because I am shooting for +650 at the wheels with my new set up. As you might expect, the stock rod bolts are not safe at that level. ;)

Thanks for the offer but I have a pretty full up shop. If you want to come over and document the change that would be cool. I will buy the beer.

650 horsepower and you think just bolts is enough you will need rods & pistons or a broom & dust pan

If you change the rod bolts you will need to resize the rod ends to ensure that the alignment of the rods dont change!! :nono: If you dont you may wipe out a crank or a rod. Talk to a machine shop about rod bolt replacement prior to attempting to accomplish this on an assembled engine!

Also DO NOT REPLACE YOUR OIL PAN WITHOUT following the proper installation procedure and insuring the proper alignment.

If you just bolt the pan back on it will crack!!!! :mad

I understand the LS1 does not need the rod ends resized due to the cracked rod design. The rod is made as one parts then the end cracked apart. The end will realign on the crack from the original break.

Has anyone changed the bolts in the car. Other forums have discussed that an F-body needs the motor pulled but the C5 might be changed in the car due to the motor sitting further back in the car.

I remember reading a year or 2 ago that earlier model C5s had a one-piece oil pan, requiring the engine hoist and various shenanigans to let the oil pan clear the subframe on removal, but later models used a 2-piece oil pan, making life easy. I'm not sure though.

It is eazy (from what I understand) to remove the oil pan on the later model cars.
