Default COULD THESE 2 REASONS BE WHY my C5 year 2000 ENGINE LUGHT IS ON?

Hi, Everyone.

I just dropped several thou on my automotive child's checkup and repairs. Subsequently I noticed that my engine light came on and stays on.

I have Borla ATAKs plus (I don't know what brand) exhaust cutouts. There's a lever on my dashboard which can turn off the cutouts but they sound so beautiful I never do. So I don't know if the "check engine" light would go off if I had it in regular mode.

Anyhow, my piggybank would rather I didn't have any more repair costs in the near future.
I read that the cause of the light staying on could be a defective O2 sensor or catalytic converter.

May I have your advice, please?

The link below will instruct you on how to read what the code is.

Close the cutouts, and drive it for a couple days. MIL light may turn off. For reading codes, hold options button down with one hand while pressing fuel button 4 times within 10 seconds. Codes will start displaying......

Start recording video with your phone before you bring up the codes so you don't miss the first couple and have to step through them by hand later.

For sure!!! I made a video with my phone, but forgot to mention that. Also, run the diagnostics with the engine idling. Some codes only show with the engine idling......

start by closing the cutouts. That's possibly the culprit. Also you mention you just dropped a "few thou on repairs...and subsequently you now have the check engine light". First thing I'd do if I didn't do the work myself is bring the car back to the shop that supposedly did the repairs and have them diagnose. What were the "repairs" and "maintenance" the shop supposedly performed?

Hard to trust a shop that did "repairs" then give you your car back with a CEL that wasnt on when you dropped it off. Start with bringing it back to who worked on it last. If they are honest and the work they did resulted in the CEL...they may make it right. If they don't make it right and the issue logically stemmed from something they did...then find a new mechanic.
