No way to treat strut disfunction!! Think helium balloons-Once the gas has escaped, party is over......
You could clamp a Vice-Grip pliers on the strut rod, or prop the hood open with a stick of wood, as several terminal cheapskates I know do. Their cars are not allowed in my garage until they're fixed.
New hood struts, buy two or four if you have a coupe.
Mine just died too. I want quality and perfect fit, I see mixed reviews on Amazon parts at about $20 a pair. Top Flight has a pair at $45 pair, worth the difference??

Seems to me I saw someone using a brass clamp of some sort on the gas strut. The brass is of course much softer than the steel strut, so no additional damages are caused. Keeps you from getting wacked in the head. lol
Possible source/video: C&S Corvettes???
That said, replacement gas springs aren't too horribly expensive. I need a set for the trunk lid on my Z06.
Tron Z nailed it!! C&S sells some sort of clamp made just for this purpose. They claim even people who have had new struts installed on their hoods have had the hoods come crashing down when working outside in a wind, and this has caused injuries....
