Default Blackwing install help

I am new to the forum and I need some help. I bought a blackwing and tried to install it today. I thought it was going to be simple as everyone said it would be but I had some trouble. I could not figure out how the blackwing fit into the existing filter housing. I also have a 2001 and I wasn't sure where the adapter went. I have downloaded two sets of instructions and they weren't very helpful with these specific point. TO add insult to injury when I went to put back the stock filter the two strap brackets used to fasten the filter housing came off and I couldn't figure out how to put them back. Once I tried I cracked both of the plastic clips on the fastener and I have to get new ones. Any advice on a true mod beginner would be appreciated. THanks

The blackwing does not fit into the existing filter housing. That all gets removed. After you remove the actual filter from the stock assembly, reach down to the bottom of the housing. You will feel 2 rubber grommets. Pull em off, and then pull the housing out. Also, your blackwing comes with the adaptor for newer corvettes and the fitting for pre-2000 corvettes. The fitting for the pre 2000 corvettes comes attached to the blackwing, and the adaptor comes loose in the box. this pre 2000 fitting gets removed and replaced with the adaptor for the post-2000 corvettes. be sure to lube all your connections, thus making everything easier to assemble.

for pictures of the install, go to the tech tips section of the website. Look for "blackwing Install instructions"

hope this helps

Thanks for the help. THe two rubber grommets look like they are screwed in. Do they just pop out and then out them on the blackwing. Please excuse my ignorance but I want to do this right and I want to do it myself.

from my recollection, I believe the grommets just pop off. Give em' a good tug. They are made of flexible rubber. the next trick is to get the factory grommets to line up with the holes on the bottom of the blackwing. It will take some wrestling, but it will go. Dont worry about using a little force, as far as I know, the only real delicate intake component is the MAF. Definitely do the install yourself! You CAN do it! The blackwing was my first do it yourself mod...that led to lowering the suspension and a bunch of other things. Any more questions, do not hesitate to ask! good luck.

Thanks for the help. I think I am almost there. I am having a little trouble getting the air hose to reconnect to the Blackwing. I also lost the key to the MAF and I have to get another one. Other than that I am just about done. THanks for all of your help,

Go for it
The Blackwing was my first project, and yes I was afraid of screwing it up. It took me a little while to figure it out. Hey, it never hurts to ask. There are no dumb questions. Beware of dumb answers.

I'm glad mine is a '99...my Blackwing install was a snap. Less than 30 minutes to pull the stock box and do the install.

Seems like alot of folks have problems installing the Blackwing on 2000 or newer models. Are they that much different?

Btw, there IS an OEM-style Blackwing that fits into the stock airbox. I just asked about it in another thread.

Oh, OK....THAT'S what you were talking about :)
I wasn't sure and had never heard of a Blackwing filter for the stock box...now it makes sense.

Use a little lubricant like wd-40 on the grommets will make them slip over the 2 posts in the car easier. The same with fitting the grommets and the air hose fitting into the blackwing.

A little silicone spay on the grommets, studs and rubber bellows make it a piece of cake to get back together and get everything properly aligned and seated.
