2003 auto,
pulled out of garage last week, changed oil no issues. Two days ago was sitting in line and DIC warning went off about trans temp. Oil and coolant was normal. Got to my location let it sit for a couple hours went back home. Started at 135 and ended back up to 262 by the time I got back home, about 20 minutes. The temps stayed somewhat even while coasting but would raise when under load. No fluid has leaked out or is leaking out. Opinions?
Clutches in transmission or lockup in the converter may be going out. If either are slipping it would cause the heat. It also would explain why they went down when coasting .
How many miles on the car ?
I'd try a new sender first. But it doesnt look good when it stabilizes when coasting, but goes up under power. OP-Is it slipping or not shifting properly? MC556 mentioned the TCC (Lockup) slipping. This took out a lot of the 4L60E's parents, the 700R4.
I’m my old vette I lost a transmission that had clutches slipping and I lost a built RPM and a Vigilante converter due to a bad tune. Converter wasn’t locking up all the way and burnt the disk. The debris got all in the transmission.
Both scenarios acted the same with the temps. I don’t even have a 4l60 car anymore and still have an extra one sitting on the floor due to the issues I was having.
Forgot to add FTI 2800 stall with lock up
never had issues while driving, actually was playing with a Camaro in the same morning. At either time there was no slipping in the shifting at any point that day.
While I’m in the process of gathering all the parts to swap in a C6 manual, i hope this is just a censor.
So after speaking with my transmission builder I checked the fluid level after driving it up to running temp. Trans is fucked… it actually drove nice and the trans temps warmed up slowly. Once I hit around 190 it decided to slip out of 4th gear and I hit a red light and the temps started climbing over 200. Right before I made it home the trans didn’t want to down shift out of 4th on its own. Parked, jacked it up, opened drain plug, and purple fluid came out with a nice metallic shine. It was only about a cup over full so yea, time to manual swap
That sucks. Obviously I’ve been there. I’m sure you know that your converter is toasted as well. It’s definitely not trash but it will have to go in for service if anyone is going to use it. I have a special hate for the 4l60e. .
These cars are so much more fun banging gears anyway
Yup, sounds like the TCC took a dump, and took out the valve body and whatever else. Wait until you find the magnet in the pan! It'll look 5 times normal size with all the metal on it!!!!!
