Default coolant purge procedure?

My reservoir is leaking and i figured why not drain the entire system because im not sure when the last time it was changed.

Ill be draining the reservoir first to see if its clear and clean but in case i drain the system.

Would it be okay to let the engine idle for 15 min with the cap off in order to bleed the system?

Turn the heat on and run the car for a while with the cap off until the thermostat opens

Recommend you follow the procedure Smoken1 referred you to. I believe it came straight from the Service Manual.

Great advice, provided one knows what to watch/listen/measure when the thermostat opens.

For engines without the 4-corner steam vents, I like to raise the front end while bleeding/re-filling the cooling system to ensure that there are no air pockets at the back of the cylinder heads. Technically, you shouldn't have to, but I like the belt and suspenders approach ... especially since getting this wrong can lead to a catastrophic engine failure.

yeah. If you don’t know that, you shouldn’t be touching anything under a hood.
