Default Oil filter misadventure

Last fall I changed the oil before putting the 02 to bed for the winter. When I went to remove the filter ( I use k&ns for the nut on it to facilitate ease of removal, torqued to 25 ft/lb like the book said) the things would not come off to the point of rounding out the nut. Using ordinary strap wrenches didn't work either. Gave up for the winter, then tried again. Finally got it off with a vice grips style filter wrench from auto zone. So my advice is don't torque the filter to 25 lbs . It seems to be way too excessive, at least to me

Oil filters are supposed to be hand tight.

That's what I thought, but it appears Chevrolet believes differently!

Spin on until filter gasket makes contact and then 3/4 turn more. It’s right on the filter. Mobil 1 filters anyways.

Where did you see 25 ftlbs?

The oil filter gasket should have clean oil wiped on before its installed. Then had tighten about 3/4 turn after gasket contacts mount. Never had one leak nor had trouble taking it off when installed using that process.

It was actually 22 ft lbs. Found it by typing in c5 Corvette torque table tried to copy it here but couldn't figure it out. Of the hundreds of oil filters I've changed. I never had one so hard to take off

Only time I've struggled to remove a oil filter like that was the first change on my Malibu and Equinox when they were new. Must be that 22lbft thing 🙂

22 lb ft is the correct spec. It's on page 3 of the attached portion of the service manual.
Sometimes filters are a huge pain to remove. I've pounded screwdrivers all the way through one on some vehicles and used that as a handle for additional torque and sometimes chiseled a spot on the sealed edge to pound on them until I got them unstuck.

I have in the past, had this perticular, to the point I had to use a small chisle and work on just the metal bottom of the filter. If you can get a flat spot on th fitler base, then just keep trying to get it to move, and in my case I only had to move it about a 1/4 inche and it then was very easy to remove it, at least it was in my case.

The manual says 24 or 25 lb-ft, as I recall. I tried that once, using a torque wrench. It went OK, but it was incredibly difficult to get off later. I never did that again.

Edit: I see after reading further it's 22 lb-ft. That's what I did. It was tough to get off.

Found an oil removal pliers that have jaws attached to a vise grips setup at auto zone. FINALLY managed to get the filter off using that. Could only turn the filter about 15 degrees at a time due to how it fit into the engine but off it came eventually. I sure didn't torque it to 22 ft/lbs this time though!

Try installing one with that torque, and you'll understand why you will never do it again!

I had owned my Vette for a few months before I decided to change the oil. Someone had probably hand tightened my oil filtre. I went to unscrew it and it fell into my hand. I used 11 ft-lbs to tighten my K & N filtre. It ain't gonna fall off again.
