Having trouble with the temp control on my son’s ‘04 coupe. When I turn the temp ****, I can’t get the temp to go down. If I play with it long enough…. and go slow I can eventually get it to work properly. Any ideas on a fix? Something simple or get a new or rebuilt unit? Thx.
When I bought my C5 10 years ago and after 9 months of ownership, I started having A/C issues blowing cold air. I searched the Forum and there was a recommendation to keep the passenger's side temp side at the middle mark. I Also vacumed the air ducks out. So far I have not had any further problems.

Thx… but my problem is totally different. It will blow at whatever temp it’s set to but I’m having trouble adjusting the temp. Seems to have a mind of its own.

What should we gleam from this picture? Is the car running with the A/C on and the display is not working? Which **** are you referring to?

I see you posted the exact same concern 2 years ago...guess you never got it fixed...you should turn the temp control ***** slowly...it can be the HVAC control head, wiring, or actuator depending on what side is not responding...if you had a scan tool that can read HVAC "counts" or voltage..0-255 counts (60 to 90 degrees) or 0-5 volts ..if you are not good with electrical maybe just replace the HVAC head or take the car to an auto-electric shop....you can physically see the passenger side actuator by removing the glovebox and looking inboard...as you rotate the passenger temp **** you will see the actuator motor rotate...any codes ???
If you have not already done so, to re-calibrate the actuators, here is the procedure:
1, Turn OFF the ignition
2. Remove the battery positive voltage circuit fuse of the HVAC Control Module (fuse #27 in passenger fuse box).
3. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
4. Install the fuse.

It’s hard for me to envision the actuators as the problem. When I turn the temp **** down (lower temp)… displayed temp goes up. Eg: temp at 72 & turn C clockwise, the indicated temp goes to 73. Try again & 74. Heat output coincides with indicated temp on display. If I play long enough & go slow I can eventually get it down. It seems to have gotten worse over time.
it’s my son’s car, -trying to help with a few maintenance items.

...and you have personally found this to be effective? Where exactly does the contact cleaner go when you spray it, except back at you? There are no exposed contacts by just removing the ****.

Im guessing I need to work it down between the shaft and the barrel. I’ll give it a try this week & report back.
Exactly, the rotary encoder in your control module is well behind that faceplate.
Even if you disassembled the control module, I doubt spraying contact cleaner on the encoder would accomplish anything.
The symptoms you describe sound exactly like the rotary encoder is just plain worn out and needs to be replaced. This used to happen frequently with aftermarket radios that use those type of encoders for volume controls.

Makes sense but I’m still going to try to clean contacts
Assuming the control needs to be replaced, where can I get one or who can do the repair? Gotta be someone out there.
