Default C5Z 416 stroker build

Hello all,

I'm in the beginning stages of putting together an LS3 based 416 for my 04 Z. I figured I'd document it and also seek guidance/recommendations along the way. Car is solid as-is but I recently sold my s/c C6 GS and I'm missing the power - just going n/a this time. I just picked up some 823 heads and I've got a line on a LS3 block so they'll be the foundation. Not a max effort build, just a weekend bruiser that I can beat on and not feel too bad about. Next step is getting the heads squared away while I wait for the block. I'm thinking just a refresh at the machine shop with an LS3 rocker kit with trunnion upgrade. Anyone want to chime in and help guide the build?

I'm going to keep an eye on this. Couple questions. Why did you decide to go 823s when you have 243s? Why 408 vs I think the other popular choice is 416??? What is your rwhp goal?
I think a 408 w just touched up 823s, cam and supporting mods will get you about 500.

Best of luck w your build.

Thanks! I liked the 823s for the top end power over 799/243 etc. Plus, I plan to try and sell the LS6 once build is done and I'd like to sell it complete as it's a really tight motor. I don't dig but I enjoy the occasional 60-130. A friend had an LS2 block lying around that I got for 1k and the heads were fairly priced. I wanted to go 416 but the prices in my area for even a short block are stupid high. North of 2k vs the 1000 I paid for the ls2. I'll probably regear as well and go with 3.90

Managed to find a pretty good deal on an LS3 block so plans have been updated to a 416 vs the 408 that I had originally planned. Heads were dropped off at Race Flow Development in VA Beach this morning. I should have those back in 2 weeks or so. Looking at top end components and the bottom end stuff now to get a plan together for internals.

Had the paint corrected/ceramic coated and removed the side moldings and badges. Taillights were darkened and LED lights were added. Pulled seats and cleaned the interior.

Thats going to be a lot of fun in a 3100lb car.
I have a HCI setup that makes 453 whp stock cubes on ls6
At some point a 400+ ci motor may get swapped in

I agree, that power to weight ratio will make it a fun drive for sure.

Heads are back from the shop. Definitely excited about them and really looking forward to WHP numbers.

What compression are you targeting?
What intake manifold/tb?
Power & drive-ability goals?
Cam thoughts?

compression should be right at 12:1
intake will be a fast 102
shooting for mid 500 wheel, won't drive like stock but it's a weekend toy so i want it to be a handful
cam is being decided on nowish.

We'll probably cap it at 7400 or so, for now.

This should be a fun project. I'm curious on the cam and induction choice you choose? With 3.90 gears it will come on strong.

Good breathing LS3 heads can take quite a bit of cam NA. 500 Wheel is very doable since those heads make the air.

Another thought...

Since you're installing a Gen 4 motor in a Gen 3 chassis do you have to modify/change ECU to account for the 58 tooth reluctor wheel or the knock sensors?

New crank will be 24 tooth so all will be compatible. Otherwise, lingenfelter box would be needed but wanted to avoid that. Also - shooting for 550+ whp as a goal.
