LED DRL Upgrade - Rapid Flash even after Hyperflash Install (fixed)
Passing this on for other members that might run into this. My exterior lights were all stock incandescent bulbs. Last week I figured I'd install a DRL LED upgrade kit that I'd purchased a while back. After getting the DRL LED bulbs installed I tried the turn signals just to see if I could get by with no hyperflash since the only LED bulbs in the turn signal circuits were the DRL's (rears were still incandescent). No such luck. I had a rapid flash the second I turned on the turn signals. Installed a hyperflash wire harness that I'd purchased along with the DRL LED's. Still had hyperflash! I could touch the new harness flasher and feel that it was now the turn signal flasher (could feel it click) but it was flashing too quickly. I counted about 125 flashes per minute, and it should have been around 80 flashes per minute. Hmmm....checked all the wiring and everything was good. Put the old incandescent DRL bulbs back in place with the hyperflash harness installed, and even those were flashing at the high rate.
After re-installing the LED DRL's I purchased a new flasher and that immediately addressed the problem. Even though the harness was new, I had a defective flasher. In the photo below, the defective module that came with the harness is on the left. The new flasher is on the right.
One last note...be careful to check the connectors when replacing flashers. Other posts on this forum say to use a CF13 flasher as a replacement for LED flashers. In my case, a CF13 would have had the Plus and Negative leads reversed. All LED flashers are not the same....
