Hi I have a 98 C5 and I am really confused on what is going on. So I am unable to fully turn my key to the "off" position and the lock cylinder is stuck in the Accessory position. I've tried basically everything to get the cylinder to the off position. I am able to take my key out at any position and I'm able to shift gear without the key even being in the ignition. The shifter light stays on and the security light wont come on because of this problem. I have NO problems with the key getting stuck or the car not starting in general. I will attach a video to better help visualize what is going on. In the video I am applying a little bit of pressure on the ignition cylinder which allows for the security light to come on and the shifter light to turn off. However even if I have the key in the ignition and do the same thing I did in the video, the key still will not go to the off position. So I am wondering with all of this information, would this be a problem due to a bad ignition switch or a bad ignition lock cylinder? I was thinking about going ahead and replacing the ignition switch since its an easy fix, but wanted to hear what other people think might be the issue. I am really hoping its not the ignition cylinder. I am just really confused and any help would be appreciated!
There's a small mechanical cable that connects the front part of the A4 shifter to the ignition switch assembly, check to see if this cable is connected at both ends.
Best thing to do is pull the whole Ignition switch assembly and have a locksmith take a look at it. I am leaning to the Ignition lock cylinder as the problem.
I use the 'KISS' method of fixing stuff to do first for all my fixes. Suggest getting a can of CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner and spray the ignition switch opening seveveral times while inserting the key in an out. It worked for me but ultimately I did have to replace the ignition switch.
