I opened it up and I discovered a cracked block. I am looking to reuse as many parts as possible because the engine only had 23,000 on it before the crack. That being said is there another block that will take all the parts from the ls6 or should I just buy another oem/aftermarket ls6 block. I am also thinking of doing a cam and injectors. I’m looking to keep the power reasonable for now so I don’t want to go crazy with the cam. I am unsure of where to even start and was hoping for some guidance.
So - you can't really find "new" LS1 / LS6 blocks anymore, so you're options for Aluminum Blocks are pretty much:
Go with a Used LS1 / LS6 block / engine
Go with a new LS3 Block.
If you look on the major on-line auction site - a (heavily) used LS6 engine goes for $4K and up. That engine should probably be rebuilt before installing it. Figure a bare minimum of $3,000, and probably significantly more than that.
The LS3 blocks will fit into your car no problem - but some "Additional parts" will be required - as there are differences between the two blocks, and if you're going with the LS3 block - you would probably want to avail yourself of the better flowing LS3 head design.
You could go with any number of LS Cast Iron engine blocks - lots more availability and lots cheaper - but an extra 100 LB of weight on the front nose of the car. Personally - I would go with an aluminum block in a Z06 - but it's your call.
Aren't 2001-04 LS1 blocks the same thing as an LS6 unit? If so, those should be relatively easy to find.
A great place to start your search, but I’ve been looking for an affordable spare for a couple of years with very limited success. Giant bummer on the crack, — but as already asked — where? There may be some enterprising and effective alternatives out here.
Brain fade. Step 1: post a want to buy thread on the parts forum. You never know who has what where and is just looking for an excuse to find some cubic feet of space.
