I have a 04 z . low milage. 25k, just did oil change, clutch flush and serviced the black wing cai, now getting some backfiring , mostly when letting off the throttle but this car has never done that before? Really haven't looked it over yet ( will start tomorrow ) just wondering if anybody had any ideas? Thanks !
I put fresh gas in it but there could be some residual storage fuel in there.
Maybe you over oiled your Blackwing….this can affect your MAF sensor…if you have a scan tool check your fuel trims and also check your MAF sensor…should read around 5.7 to 6 grams/second at hot idle…other than this there are many causes but start with cleaning the MAF sensor…that is the only thing you’ve done that may have caused this…when I had my 01 and oiled my Blackwing I always would clean the MAF after running the car for awhile.
thanks for the reply C5 Diag , I think that's is exactly whats wrong , I my have gotten a little over zealous with the B W oil! Haven't had a chance to work on the car yet but I'm sure that's it! I will post what happens ! Thanks again!

No problem !!…my ‘08 has a Callaway Honker filter similar to yours and I oil it very sparingly !!…if you have an air compressor I’d blow some of that oil off of it first.
Sounds like you have a good line on the issue. The other possibility is your connection (air bridge) between the MAF sensor and the intake isn't sealed. On occasion mine slips off and I get a rough idle and backfires due to unmetered air getting in..
Well I got to work on the car today, pulled air filter and cleaned it of any oil that might be the problem , cleaned MAS , it did not look dirty but cleaned it anyway, I did not clean TB but it is spotless! car still letting out little backfire at idle, not at start up ,just after a little ride.
Next step will be the scanner, see if there are any codes! Thanks for the suggestions , I will let you guys know what happens ! Thanks again!
PS bluestreak63 did not hear any random drum beat sounds out back at startup or after the ride just the backfire!
Just to let you guys know, got the car running back to normal, Changed out plugs and wires and she running great! The wires didn't look real bad but I changed them anyway, they where old!
Thanks to everyone who replied , really appreciate the help !
Glad to hear you got it sorted. Was the popping just when you let off throttle? Did it pop/backfire when you started out from a stop? I’m chasing an issue with backfiring from starting out, say from a stop sign or a red light. Also, the passenger side exhaust seems to have random bass drum beat. And it maybe just me but when I first start it, it seems the passenger side, where the sound is coming from, is not as warm as it warms up compared to the drivers side exhaust. The air coming out the exhaust I mean.
Bluestreak63 , my car was just letting out some backfires at idle, scanner said it was misfire on #4and#5, everything else was normal. I think the thing to do is get the scanner on it and go from there, good luck hope you can get it running right soon!
