LS6 Heads
Different cam
Z06 intake
better air lid
tit. mufflers
M12 tranny (makes the rear seem like a 3:90 ratio)
Weight savings
maf is also different
'00 MAF, intake & exhaust manifolds all carryovers for the 345 bhp 97-00. Two cat exhaust unless California or other emissions similar states which mandated the four cat system.
'01 LS1/Z06 share the improved Air Intake, MAF (.5 inch wider in diameter), and better breathing intake & exhaust manifolds). Z06 engine-wise had a bigger cam, heads, and higher rev capabilities LS1: 350 bhp & Z06 (LS6): 385 bhp. Both had the new four cat system, while the Z06 had the titanium cat cack for weight savings and a slight increase in exhaust flow.
'02-'03 LS1 is a carryover, and all nationwide retain the four cat system. Z06 sees larger improvements in tuning & tweaking that necessitate going to a two "special" cat system. '02-03 Z06 generates a 405+ hp bhp rating. 2001 Z06 owners :cuss loudly, damn:chevy and either trade their '01 Z06's for '02's or mod the crap out of their cars with a vengeance.
Z06's were lighter for two main reasons, mainly the fixed roof coupe body (which was always lighter-no huge glass hatch or top mechanics), and the titanium muffs (together probably 60-80 lbs lighter) coupled with a thinner windshield. Major options were excluded such as the CD player in the trunk, no HUD (maybe explains why it got the thinner WS?), and a few other things-thereby increasing the perceived weight drop from the "portly" loaded coupes and verts (Corvette myth #389: similarly optioned vert's are lighter than the coupes, again due to the massive greenhouse of glass on the rear hatch).
Z06's had improved geared trans/tires/suspension-and maybe(?) an improved clutch (after all my clutch problems, I told Chev to give me Z06 parts and the mech said they are the same-just different part numbers). Z06's and verts suffer from poorer aerodynamics and are generally top speed drag limited to 165-170, while the slippery fatso coupe has little difficulty reaching the 170-180 range.
One of the biggest handling and braking improvements on the Z06 vs a Z51 LS1 was the use of one inch wider non-runflat tires (which allowed a slightly better alignment specs also).
Phew :nopity sorry for the mega post, but this is what I've seen/read/learned on this subject.
And it ain't so much the extra 55 hp as it is the torque and where it's made, AND the extra rpm to use. But the torque......you can drive a Z06 around the city in third gear and still out accelerate all the other cars out there.
As for the thinner glass and HUD....02 and 03 have HUD as standard issue, but do have the thin glass, too.

Re: C5 vs. Z06
Even the 01 Z06 is a night and day difference versus a regular C5. I test drove an 02 Z51 6 speed coupe and then test drove the 01 Z06 (notice which one is in the sig now :D ). No comparison! With the 02 coupe it was very powerful and handled well, but when I drove the Z it was like WOW!! this thing really hauls!! Even with the wider non-runflat tires, it is a real issue to find traction in 1st - 3rd gears and the handling is incredible. The car really does "feel like it is on rails". The main difference that is really noticeable is how the Z06 pulls really hard all the way to it's 6500rpm redline and how hard it is to keep traction. I actually broke the tires loose the other day in 3rd by nailing it at about 5000rpm.
Personally, I don't see the extra 20 ponies from 01-02+ as being worth the extra money right now. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the extra power, and will get there and further with some mods, but I picked up my 01 Z for about $8-$10K less than what I could find used 02 Zs for.
Like others have said here are the differences:
C5 to 01 Z06:
cam
heads
intake
air filter lid
springs & shocks
lighter weight (about 100lbs lighter than base coupe)
01 Z06 to 02+ Z06
cam
exhaust valves
air filter lid
no maf screen
rear shocks
removal of pup cats

True. My 2000FRC ran real good, pulled hard, etc, but I rarely hit the rev limiter in first or second, as I could easily pull for the next gear in time to avoid it. But, with my 03 Z, I'm forever hitting the limiter in both 1st and 2nd!! And I'm not a rookie with high powered stick cars. It's just that it revs so quick and continues to pull so hard right up to redline, with absolutely no sense of the power "peaking", that it's sooooo easy to forget to prepare to shift [as stupid as THAT may sound!] I've banged the limiter in 3rd several times, too, because I wasn't watching the tach and the car was just ppppuuuuulllllllllllllinnnnnngggg.

Actually the TQ output for the LS1 is equal down low to the LS6 because of good flow velocity of the smaller LS1 runner, coupled with the less agressive cam lift (which by the way starting in 2001, was the 6.0 liter truck cam brought over from that GEN III motor). LS6 breaths better mid range and up top.
The reason you feel a difference in accelleration down low in the Z06, is because of its lower gearing and less weight.
It's HP, RPM and Gearing that play the role in moving a car. Not specifically TQ. Infinite TQ can do no work without RPM, but that is another discussion.
The LS1 is extremely undercammed, and there are cams out there alone that can produce 30-50 in a headered vehicle like mine
I'm actually modding my car to exceed '03 Z06 specs (and C6, and Viper specs!). I've saved 40lbs of dead weight in the exhaust alone, and will soon have Viper sized tires.
I love the Z06 specs (hate the price though), but had to have the coupe rear hatch space, and the removable top
One more point on the Z06 is tranny gearing. The mn12 is aclose ratio box and 1st 3 gears are numrically taller. Its like taking a 3:42 out and switching in a 3:90 on the base coupes MN6.Dave S.
The numbers look right, however, the 97-00 cam is the same. It wasn't until 2001 that the LS1 was given the 6.0 liter truck cam, which remains through todays 2003 model.
All this being said. How do reach the 03 Z06's hp? I have mti ram air, ls6 intake, tpis lts, x-pipe and corsa exhaust. I have an a4 00 3.15 vert. Will a cam and pulley put over the top? Any recomendations for good hp gain cam w/o heads?
I am very happy with the cam in my sig. I did go to 2002 Z06 heads though, so it wasn't cam only. The car breaks loose real easy now, even up to 60mph so I don't know if I will supercharge as originally planned.
