Default Just finished changing Trans Fluid.

I just finished changing my Trans. Fluid. I replaced it with Mobile 1 syn. ATF. I just drove about five miles and cant tell any change in the shifting. Still notchy and stiff esp. going into First gear. Very minor but not as smooth as when I first bought the car. I have 56K on the car and figured it would be worth a shot. The old Trans. Fluid was very clean and had no foul odor. Thanks for the help in suggesting what type of fluid to use.

Mine can sometimes be stiff, esp. going into 1st when it's cold. I'm used to the T-56 in my '94 Z-28, where the shifter connects directly to the tail shaft housing of the tranny.

The C5 tranny, located back on the rear axle, requires a remote mount for the shifter and an extension going into the tranny. So the linkage isn't near as direct.

Also, any aftermarket shifter is going to amplify any stiffness by their basic nature. Do you know if your shifter is stock or not?

Hope this helps, and have a good one,
Mike

I have a stock shifter. It used to shift great. I had been told to flush and bleed the clutch cylnder wich I did. It seemed to help some but not much.

Hmm. Is it only 1st that's stiff or all gears? If it's a clutch related problem then the problem should be in multiple gears (probably the lower ones) and reverse. The upper gears might not act too bad because the rpm changes aren't that significant.

Now, if the problem's in the transmission itself, it'll probably be limited to one or two gears. When you put it into 1st, is there any grinding, or do you just have to wait a bit? Also, I know it was said earlier, but cold temps will make any car shift stiffer until the transmission warms up, which requires driving. Just sitting idling doesn't do anything for the transmission or differential temps.

Hope this helps, and have a good one,
Mike

Yeah it is stiff going into all gears but worse at the lower gears. I can drive for a couple of hours and it still is hard to get into 1st. from a dead stop. It feels like the syncs. are not letting it all the way in first. I usually have to go to 2nd first and then put it in fist or double clutch it. Some times it feels like it is in first and then pops out when I go to take off. Really takes part of the fun out of driving the car. I used to be able to shift down into first from any other gear smoothly. I dont get any grinding just doesnt want to go in. Any help would be great. I can power shift and put the car in 3rd at low speeds and low Rpms and nail it and the clutch doesnt slip. Doesnt feel like a worn clutch wich I have exp. in other cars.

Well, it kinda sounds like the clutch isn't releasing completely. Could be a weak slave cylinder, throwout bearing, etc. I know that when the clutch in my '94 Z-28 was dying, it wouldn't slip, but chattered like crazy in 1st, then 2nd, etc. gears.

When you bled the clutch, did you just clean out the old fluid in the tank, or did you get to the bleed valve on the slave? Even that probably isn't the whole problem, but it might help. Another thought, it could be the master cylinder in the clutch system.

Hope this gives you some ideas to try out. Good luck,
Mike
