help!!! message console on my c5 says, reduce engine power????
i am new to this place and barely registered yesterday i have a black 99 c5 coupe and its been parked for a while, but the past week or two i had been turning it on and it worked perfectly but when i tried to turn it on yesterday morning, the message display said, reduce engine power, and traction control system, does any body know what this means, or what it might signifiy, as i proceded to turn the car on it would only idle rough and the gas pedal wouldnt work , it wouldnt give it any gas, after trying to turn it on and off three times or so .. the third time when i turned it on , it reved up to 2000rpm and then died back down to the usual rough idle, i tried to see and look for the throttle linkage, but didnt see it, its in a different place then my c4 i believe, umm any suggestions or ideas on where to start looking for the problem? orany sensors i should be checking out first? any help would be greatly appretiated,
thanks
bobby

i tried to see and look for the throttle linkage, but didnt see it, its in a different place then my c4 i believe,
This car is WAYYYYYY different than the C4. There is no direct throttle linkage. Your foot is only connected to a computer. You tell the computer what you want with the foot and the computer adjusts the throttle accordingly.

Bobby
Before you start spending money on what you think "might" be the problem. See if you can go back about 10 days on the forum. This same question came up then. I also have had this problem with my 1998 coupe. I had to shut it off and wait a few minutes to restart it. It never happened again. -BUT- I found out I was not alone. It is very possible the relay for the theft deterrant system which is located behind the kick panel on the passenger side of the car gets water in it. There is a 1" black hose that runs from the air box to the blower motor. Condensation forms on this hose and drips right on this relay. The relay has a cover on it that you can pry apart to see if it is wet or not. I believe you may have to remove some plastic covering from underneath the dashboard to expose the black hose. Forum members have put plumbimg insulation around this hose to insulate it.
I haven't done this to my car yet, but I will before the season starts.

Re: help!!! message console on my c5 says, reduce engine power???? (king_pin)
The problem that you are having could be related to a wet/damp Body Control Electronics Module (BCM)
I would check your Drivers Information Console (DIC) first to see if you have any codes set. It should lead you to the problem.. IF you have lots of different codes set it could be related to a wet BCM
The BCM is located in the passengers foot well, under the floor mat, behind the removeable toe board cover. Remove the cover and the silver box to the left of the fuse box is the BCM. If the compartment is damp or you see any moisture on or around the module, I would recommend drying the module and the compartment out with a hair dryer.
If it is not damp, clear all of your codes and start the car again. If you have the same problem, read the codes again.
If you do find a wet module and dry it out and all is well; let me know and I will give you detailed instructions on how to solve your moisture problem.
E-mail me at bill327@msn.com or post again. I have this post linked to my e-mail.

Re: help!!! message console on my c5 says, reduce engine power???? (vetterdstr)
Bobby if you dont know how to look at the codes hold option button down and hold it while you push the fuel button five times. Then your codes will show. Hold the reset button down till the clear and it says no more codes. Hope this helps
Re: help!!! message console on my c5 says, reduce engine power???? (vetterdstr)
To read the codes. Insert and turn the key to the on position. Push the reset botton and clear all messages. Press and hold the options button and hit the fuel button 4 times. This will put you in the diagnostics mode. It will run you through all 11 modules and tell you how many codes are set in each one i.e. BCM = 3
Press options button once more and you will go into the manual mode and will be able to read each module and write down each code. Use the fuel and gauges buttons to cycle through the codes for that module. Press options again to advance to the next module.
To clear all codes press and hold the RESET button until all codes clear. To exit turn off the ignition.
Once you get all of the codes written down, Get back on the forum and list them. We will dechipher them for you. If you have a BUTT load of codes I recommend clearing them, starting the car and if you have the same problem then write down each code for each module.

very informative post !!!
i have actually had to go through that a few months ago... and reset things....
can anyone list all the modules (11 of them) under the Diagnostic Mode menu? and tells us what they mean?
i think this is alot of codes, so i cleared them all but one of them wouldnt clear, it was the 10 pcm p1221 h c, after i cleared the ones that i could . which were all but one, i did the same procedure and i got only these codes
10pcm p1120 h c
10pcm p1211 h c
28tcs c1278 h c
i looked in the toe baord and found that silver box but couldnt open it, and i looked in the fuse box too. i felt around the silver box though and fuse box and didnt feel any condensation,
would u think its possible something happend when the battery was re conected, at the time i had driven it to a paint shop to paint a fender for a scratch and replace my whindshild cause it had a small crack from a rock on it, would that have anything to do with it, i dont think it should, it was runing find while the windshield was removed and it was moved around the inside of the shop...
well i hope u can help me, thanks everyone
Re: help!!! message console on my c5 says, reduce engine power???? (bobbyvette99)
Bobby
Code 1120 deals with the Throttle Position Sensor. (TPS) Code is set when the TP sensor #1 is less than 0.13 Volts or greater than 4.87 volts for less than 1 sec.
Code 1112 deals with the Intake air Temp sensor (IAT). Code is set when the IAT sensor is greater than 139deg C (282 deg F)
Code 1278 Deals with the Traction Control Module (TCS) Set when a malfunction is detected by the PCM The PCM then causes the TCS/ Active Handling shutdown until the malfunction has been corrected
Bobby so many non related codes. Please check to see if your DELCO battery is leaking acid on to the PCM. The PCM is below the battery tray. There have been problems where the battery leaks acid from one of the terminals and the acid eats wires and the PCM. Recommend that you remove the battery and see if you have any acid in the battery tray.
Do that check and let us know what you find or dont find. If it is good check the wires and plugs on the effected sensors to make sure that they are clean, dry and properly connected.
