2004 Base Coupe A4. Transmission was rebuilt 18 months ago by a local reputable company. They have no problem fixing the current issue under warranty. I am looking for opinions because I don't want them to need to do it multiple times. The original rebuild was for clutches. Only had 1st and 2nd gears. Worked great for over a year. Current problem. Periodically I lose 1st and 4th gears. They don't slip. It just won't downshift to 1st or upshift to 4th. Might do that for a day or two then work perfect for 1 or more days then repeat problem. GM service manual says 1-2 shift solenoid has debris, cracked seal or bad electrical connection. I can put a scanner on it and turn the solenoids on and off. I can watch them turn on and off while driving. When I lose 1st and 4th and take off from a stop, I can feel it try to shift from 1st to 2nd but it started in 2nd so no shift really occurs. 2nd to 3rd shift is fine and then it just stays in 3rd. And then everything will work fine again. Any thoughts? Anyone have this problem before? Thanks for any help.
yea the A4 trans has habit of losing4th gear when you drive it to hard. They should have corrected that issue If they rebuilt it correctly. I would bring it back to them and give them the oppertunity to rebuild it correctly this time
Just to update in case anyone else has the same problem. The shop put all new solenoids in and that fixed the problem. That was about 2 months ago. Waited until now to post to be sure everything was OK. Probably could have just changed the 1-2 solenoid but they changed all to be safe.

Why would they rebuild the trans and not replace the solenoids ? Did they recommend and you declined to save money?
