Here's my dilemma. After washing my 1999 C5 base Coupe I was drying the passenger door jam and when I started drying the accordion boot the car went crazy. Gauges were jumping around the radio lost the rear speakers and the right headlight motor started grinding. I shut her off and could still hear the headlight motor whining. I disconnected the battery and cut open the accordion boot. I found it holding two inches of water with the door harness laying in it. The tape on the harness was unraveled leaving exposed wires under water. I emptied the water pulled off the bad tape job (thx Chevy) dried everything out with a heat gun and a day in the sun. I retaped the harness and put the key in. She started right up and was purring as usual. I decided to take her for a ride to make sure all was well. She was in the dreaded LIMP MODE. I tried all I could and then had her flat bedded to my mechanic. He is the best of the best for me and my C5 and a good friend. he diagnosed the problem and informed me I could fix it myself and gave me this diagram. He said the the 10 amp engine ignition fuse is blowing and one of the components that run through it is faulty. He said to check each one until I find the bad guy. I forgot to tell him I don't know diddley about electrical stuff. So I am asking if anyone hear has ever had this problem and which component was bad. also where are these components? I know I am asking a lot here but I am the mercy of the court. I am attaching a copy of the diagram he gave me.
Well since you know nothing about electrical I’d bring the car back to your mechanic friend and let him fix it…you said he is the best…if he can’t diagnose it maybe he’s not…most mechanics are weak with electrical…you’d be best served finding an auto electric shop.
Oh I totally agree with you except for my being in a financial squeeze due to a divorce after 37 years. It's the reason my mechanic didn't do it all, he saved me about $1,200 so If I want to keep my C5 I need to do this with a little help from my friends. I was hoping someone here had had this
same condition and could tell me what he/she did. Just knowing where these components are located could be enough info to let me go at it. I could test them if I know where they are at.
I don't know if you know how to follow a wiring diagram or if you know have a DVOM and know how to use one but looking at the Ignition 1 fuse and the circuits it feeds would be WAY beyond the scope of what we can do for you on this Forum...this is something you will have to diagnose yourself...I'd suggest you get a 1 month subscription to Alldata DIY for $19.99 and look at that circuit and if you don't know how to do "short to ground" testing that is something you will have to learn...if any of the wires in that circuit are frayed and shorting to ground that is what you have to find...I'd ask your friend for help…if not I’d try to save for money for the next few months…if you put where you live in your profile a member that may live close to you may be able to help…good luck !!
