Just installed in my new Z06, it only seems noticable in third alittle in forth. Is it possible I didn't back the stops out enough? I backed 1/4" from contact and it sounds like something maybe touching. I never have had this noise with the ripper in my vert.
I would like to know if this is normal with hurst before I pull apart again. I know it's not the shift **** since I tried two, the second from my vert.
I pulled my Hurst for this very reason, and I installed it without the stops. Sorry you are experiencing the problem, but it does vindicate my thoughts on the Hurst since I seem to be in the minority with the problems I had. What other shift **** did you try, besides stock?
Could be the stops or the ****. As mentioned above, the stops are unnecessary unless you'll be doing all-out, hard shifting while racing. I had a bit of vibration with a Momo **** and then switched to the MGW pistol grip and the noise disappeared. There are several documented methods archived here of damping vibrations in aftermarket shifters including applying wheel weights to the shifter shaft, Dynomat, teflon tape on the threads and a cut-down tennis ball shoved down over the shaft.
Noise is a side-effect of these undamped shifters. Resonant frequencies are going to vary from car to car because each is a bit different. The trick is to find which method of damping quells the vibration in your particular car.
You would think with all the members who have these that we could put a cause to the problem. I am one of the lucky ones, no rattles, shakes, or vibrations. I am using the factory ****. I tightened it all the way down, so that the shaft bottomed out against the ****. I removed the stops. Otherwise I do not know what to tell you..
In addition to getting rid of the stop bolts, go to an electric motor shop and get some (more the better) steel shaft collars to fit the Hurst shaft (I'm assuming it's round like others). These have set-screws to hold them in place. Put several (at least) on the shaft as dampeners. As a side effect the top-most will hold your boot tight against the bottom of the ****.
Also, put loc-tite on the set screws. Much more elegant than some of the other dampener fixes.
I've done this on several and it works well; makes a massive **** less important (at least on your shifter :yesnod: ). However, a heavy **** will help even more. I use a drilled and tapped, black 2.25" cue ball on a shortened shaft with 4 collars on my own C-5.
I installed my Hurst almost a year ago. Being a mod freak, I have installed at least six or seven different ***** on the new shifter and have never experienced any vibration. Regardless of my experience, i continue to hear occasional stories about vibration on aftermarket shifters. Maybe i'm lucky.
Don't think the stops are an issue, since they should have been backed out a half turn (I think) from contact when installed.
Curious to hear if you solve your problem. I absolutely love my Hurst.
