I found out the hard way. After a few thousand dollars in bolt on's I still get beat by my friends stock M6. Just get a good converter and gears and beat them 95% of the time.
Assuming the guy shifting gears does a decent job, you will lose in the A4. Everything else equal, he has a few hp (15-25) over you since his tranny is more efficient. That alone will make him top end you.
Now, if he shifts like me with a manual tranny, you have a chance. I got a jump at the line and raced a new Z06 at Ennis when my car was bone stock and ran neck and neck up until the top end, when he out hp'd me. I ran a 12.81, he ran a 12.75. He was afraid to shift aggressively with his new car, mine shifted itself! I got the jump (1.87 60 ft.) due to the auto, he overpowered the line with a 2.2 60 ft.
Now, all that said, go get a big converter (3000 rpm or higher) and put on the bolt ons and you will be in the mid 12's easy in the heat. With good air (-1000 DA's), you may run high 11's! I've done it.
Then, you will have the dreaded modaholic disease :D , which is incurable! Vstella has it and is in a slow recovery but we are all afraid he is too far gone!!!

Re: stupid question (rockgt302)
what would it take for a A4 tobe about even with a M6 car without gears or a converter
There's ~a 5% greater parasitic loss in the A4; therefore, you'd need an additional 5% increase in rwhp/rwtq to stay even. Avg. stock, late model, A4 is ~295 x .05=~15rwhp req'd.
Good luck.
