Default Wheel

I can’t get my new wheel past the piece behind the threaded end, the silver piece! Any help would be appreciated as I can’t drive the car now!

While I don't have any direct experience with the C5 wheel I have been faced with many stuck steering wheels on other vehicles.

The solution has always been to beat on it like it owes you money. Also flexing the wheel from one side to the other. HARD. Like you are scared you are going to break something, but you won't.

I have yet to be defeated by a wheel.

Heat/penetrating oil/time.

Put a good amount of tension on the puller, spray with penetrating oil and then add some heat. Maybe leave it sit under tension overnight hoping to give the oil to work it's way in there.

With something THAT tight....you'll know it for sure when it pops loose. Probably scare the **** out of you.

Mine was STUCK. Laughed at the correct tool. Oil, rocking, heat, didn't care. I ended up carefully dremeling and hacksaw blading it off. Messy but it worked.

I never used a puller. I just leave the nut lose and pull it like I am having a seizure.

But I never have tried the C5 yet.

It’s looking like cutting it off is the only way it’s coming off. I’ve been spraying it with PB plaster everyday. I heated it up pretty good and beat it with a sledge. I wiggled…I pulled… what an absolute pain in the ***!!!!

I have zero experience with removing a C5 wheel but do do have experience removing rusted fasteners in difficult locations to access and the trick in those situations is to use lots of heat and then immediately douse with water. The rapid expansion and contraction usually works in short order. It has worked with both small items and large. May be totally impractical for the steering wheel removal, just throwing it out there.

Not to pour salt in the OP's wound, but I swapped the steering wheel in my other car tonight and after removing the 21mm bolt, the wheel slides off by hand with very minimal wiggling...zero tools needed

Makes me wonder if all late model cars no longer require steering wheel pullers and are this easy

This is by far one of the most frustrating jobs because it seems so easy- but for most it is a huge PITA. SHould be a 15 minute job and took me 48 hours to get the dang thing off. It is the most satisfying feeling once that bad boy pops off. Close second to having my first child. Keep at it boss!

Absolutely a PITA!! I did heads and cam in this car and didn’t cuss this much. I’ve pulled on this thing so hard I thought I was gonna rip out the column. I may wear this wheel around my neck for a week when I get off. I just don’t know what else I’m gonna need to replace in the process.

Ive been around semi trucks for over 20 years. Always on the service side for Kenworth and Peterbilt. I’m definitely used to stuck stuff. I’ve got an induction heater at the shop that will make that steering shaft bright red. But what’s gonna melt in the process. I’m trying my best not to go completely Wreck It Ralph with this thing.

Too much heat will damage the airbag clock spring, underneath the wheel. Those are not cheap.

Just saw your post,, I would use a hack saw blade and hand saw that bushing and split it once you get near the shaft.

I broke one of the J hook puller arms in trying to remove my wheel. Although I bought the puller from Rock Auto, it must not have been the best quality. I got a loaner tool from Advance auto and the arms were more substantial. That got the wheel off.

I just pulled mine today. I went and bought the J hook steering wheel puller. It was about $20 at O'Reilly's. Had to shave a little off of it to get it so go through the slots. Put it on, and proceed to tighten it. One of the j hooks broke. Then I decided to put a socket on the nut and give it a few good snacks. After that I had had enough and started pulling on it like a gorilla. First did the top, then bottom, right and once I started pulling on the left side it just came loose. I have removed a fair amount of steering wheels and never used a puller, but with all the horror stories I decided to try that route first, but it didn't work on mine. I will say that I have never had to pull so hard on a wheel so hard.

I installed a carbon wheel from Overtake. I didn't really didn't want a red stripe or stitching, but I couldn't pass it up for the price. It was on sale for $270. Pretty nice for that little bit of money.
