I'm curious-I'm looking for a daily driver H/C 400 RWHPpackage and want ot know the advantage of going to an LS6 head (vs LS1 head)?
I know the LS6 is a better head, but if both LS1/LS6's are ported & polished does the LS6 become not make good power down low...?
I guess what I am really asking is if you have to be making drastic changes to make the LS6 worth it? Is it a "free lunch?" power wise with no detriments?
you will get about 10 more rwhp from the LS6 head when both are worked......the D shaped exhaust port gives the better exhaust flow (based on what I have read)
is it worth it, considering you will have to buy cores, at a HIGH price, 10 rwhp aint worth that much IMHO :nonod:
Like Tony said, at the end of it all, you will see 10-15 rwhp assuming everything else is equal with LS6 heads. If money is no object, go for it. If your budget is tight, skip it.
depends on what you're looking to spend...I went with GM Perf. Parts CNC LS6 Heads...
You'll get the sodium filled valves, etc along with an acceptable port job for under $2000 (no cores required). In my opinion, I was going to get about the same power out of these as a more radical LS1 port for the same money...
Look at the cam only Z06 rwhp numbers. Up to 430rwhp on stock, unported Z06 heads (TAMUz06). When you do cam, heads, headers, you have the same as a Z06 engine or more, if you have Z06 heads and 2001 up block.
Then compare prices $1500/$2000 for Z06 heads complete, stock used or CNC from GM, sell your cores for even more savings. Good LS1 port job is $1800 to $2800 on your cores, its a lot more.
Then change your mind and try to sell those ported LS1 heads, you will take a beating. Sell the Z06 stock heads, people will line up to buy them.
I think the Z06 heads are the way to go.
MiamiDave,
Just did a H/C swap with Z06 heads and LPE cam. I would go with the Z06 heads. Here is the part #12564824 for 02 - 03 LS6 heads from Chevy High Performance catalog. Remember 02 Z-06 and up have the hollow and sodium filled valves, better valve springs according to the Corvette Black Book pg 116.

THE YAV :chevy
Well Dave....if you can afford the extra 1 or 2 K for the LS6 heads, do it......and keep your LS1 heads to put back on when ya get rid of the car, and you will be able to sell them for about 3/4 of what ya paid (that is a guess)
damn, we all just muddied the waters for ya Brudda  :jester

Hey Pace
Where did you get the GM Perf. Parts CNC LS6 Heads from?
I am building a set of ls6 heads as we speak and my guy assures me that all being equal i will have about 25rwhp diff, but it could be my setup--with my blower I know that because the ls6 heads burns better you do not have to use such severe timing which is very good for working with forced induction but the port shapes and the chamber shapes are far superior, the 6.0 liter heads have the same ports of the ls6 but the chamber of the ls1, I am putting in the 2.055 intake/ 1.60 ex valves with cranes new dual spring kit and my 1.8 roller rocker setup.
