Default Fuel Tank 3rd Version Design

Hello, I am a new Vette owner of a 2004 base model. Unfortunately, I am stuck with the fuel tank campaign 10150 issue. I checked my VIN with the local dealer and it shows it is within the range and was never fixed. GM recommends fuel tanks part# 25899601 and 25899602. These are supposed to be the 3rd design in the series. Does anyone know what has changed or improved? GM has discontinued both, but I am searching for them through scrap dealers. I am just wondering if I should be focused on getting these particular tanks vs the older design versions. Thanks in advance.

No idea on the revisions through the years, but if you need to buy used ones they are available from Corvette recyclers, like these;

There is nothing to fix unless you have a problem. Did you read the campaign letters?

Yes, I read the campaign letters. My sentence that I stated in my first post "I am stuck with the fuel tank campaign 10150 issue" means I have this problem with my new Vette. If I have to drop the tanks to determine the issue, I would like to have all the pieces ready to go. This include new(used) tanks.

No, it does not mean you have that problem. The campaign states ".....SOME 2004 Cadillac XLR and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles MAY have a fuel leak at the quick connectors ......." That means GM identified a risk isolated to certain VINs, but it is not an absolute certainty that you will have a problem. If you have not developed a fuel odor or leak after 20 years, you most likely are not impacted.

I went to dealership to have the car looked at. The dealer diagnosed the problem as the driver side tank connector. We looked up the campaign and my VIN is within the range that is/was affected. It was shown that my car did not have the repairs done. It does not look like the fuel system has ever been touched. We agreed that this is probably from that, but nothing is ever certain. Yes, even after 20 years it possible that can happen, especially if it is only driven an average of 1700 miles per year. I bought the car with the fuel leak smell.

Unless you have something useful to add to the conversation, please DO NOT REPLY! But you seem to have a history here and maybe some knowledge on my question. So, my question has NOTHING to do with the expired campaign. I am trying to determine if there was a design change with the 3rd revision of the tanks? Maybe a different material was used to strengthen the application. That is all that I am looking for.

It changes the discussion if disclose you actually have the problem up front ...and that you bought the car with a fuel smell/leak. I was trying to save you some time and money, because not all are impacted.

This was disclosed and moot to the question that was asked, but not sure how it would change the discussion. I appreciate the thought on saving money and time; that relates to my question.

Look the best thing you can do is likely stay with the later system parts. Find the needed parts used. Inspect to make sure they are good and fix it.

The early systems would take substantial work as they have the pumps at the bottom vs the top. Much of these parts would need to be used too.

This was an issue but not wise spread. Sadly there is no cheap easy fix.

Contact the salvage folks. They know what to look for in a good part and what parts you will needs. Vette Nuttz or Dino are great at helping in cases like this.

Fuel tank parts are out of production and getting expensive. I've had luck with https://www.car-part.com/

A recent topic on pulling the tank.

Thank you for your reply. I will look into them as well.

I apologize if my initial post was clear as mud. To me, it seemed I was getting some coarse replies which I did not understand why since I am new here. Again, I apologize if I took it the wrong way and replied inappropriately. I am excited to be a part of this community and hope to offer some knowledge as well. I have a BS in Electrical Engineering. Coarseness unfortunetely is common on the interwebz. I still like getting info here and providing what info where I can. If you hang out long enough, you kind of learn who to trust on what. Hope you continue to post.

It is common for people to post with little to no knowledge of cars and then they assume something must be done when it doesn't need to be and vice versa. This leads many to assume the perrson questioning has limited knowledge.

The car-part link queries salvage yards for inventory of desired parts. I bought a tank and asked for all associated fuel lines which the Salvage yard provided. The price was considerably less than buying the same parts from any Corvette Recycler. Sometimes you get lucky and you don't have to deal with shipping.

‘Nothing wrong on your post. It just took a little to digest what you posted and if you just glossed over you might have questions.

The follow up questions could have been worded differently but it is what it is.

You have a leak and working with a corvette salvager should know what the bad parts look like and make sure to get you what you need. Might be more but might save getting parts that are already beginning to fail. You want to do this just once.

You should get this sorted out and be fine. This was just a late 03 and 04 issue.

You may consider getting fuel pumps for the tanks while they are out. There are pumps that work for these and with the tanks out this is the time to replace them.

Guys, thanks for the replies. Again, glad to be a part of the community. I know how to hold my own and always try to contribute however I can.

I do have a new Racetronix C5/C6 fuel pump kit coming. Anyone have any comments on this? I've used them before for my old 96 SS Camaro.

Also trying to find a fuel level sensor for the passenger side. There is no problem with the current float, but I'm just being proactive since the tanks are out. GM AC Delco had discontinued the original parts.

I wouldn't replace a used float with a used float. So IMO if it isn't broke don't fix it. I wouldn't fault you for finding a spare.

My reply in post 12 has some a topic with pulling the tank and the poster discovered GM changed some things on how the fuel level sensor. I'd google search the forum and youtube for information on the racetronix install. racetronix c6 fuel pump site:www.corvetteforum.com should get some results.

Getting the tank disconnected from the cross over lines is the biggest pain in the job IMO. I've helped on one of those. The owner did the fuel pump work

Which pump did you go with? I believe Racetronix offers more than 1.

I am not planing on replacing the float with a used flavor. I am looking for new(old) GM stock one.

I have already been through the forums and found many procedures. I also have a subscription to Alldata for additional info. But thanks for the link.

I see that getting the tank disconnected is the biggest hurdle, but I am up for the challenge!

I purchased the following kit from Racetronix. See link below. Do you think this should be enough to support mods up to 550HP? I seem to think so. I understand I need more for what I am planning. This is only 1 piece to my puzzle.

Stock pump should be good for 550. The friend went with a Deatschwerks pump which he had to install in the bucket. The full Racetronix assembly shouldn't be a bad install.
