Ok guys, I want to start to do some minor mods to the vet. The stock clutch is in pretty good shape but it has 27000 miles on it. Now some of my friends with H/C packages went with a "RAM" clutch. They both drive F-Bodies. I plan to do some drag racing, and also plan to drive the car more than just on the weekends. What do you think the best clutch for my situation would be.
And everything else I would need to go with it. TIA KyleW.
Unless you plan on going beyond the 500 RWHP zone, I'd stick with an OEM 2002 or 2003 Z06 clutch disc, flywheel, pressure plate, slave/master setup. It's pretty bullet proof and is what my warranty bought for my 2001 when my clutch failed at 29000 miles due to a bad slave cylinder.
BTW, 27000 miles on a clutch is nothing. The OEM clutch should be good for around 60000 miles - unless you ride the clutch like an Arkansas hillbilly rides his sister.
If you plan on exceeding the 500 RWHP zone, I'd look at a McCleod dual disc clutch setup. Pricey, but from what I've seen, read and heard, it's solid.
I just put on a SPEC stage III clutch on about 1 week ago and it's still in its break in period. It chatters slightly in first and reverse, which is to be expected for the first 500 mile break in period. Other than that, it feels fine. If you are going to change the clutch out yourself, make sure to set a lot of time aside as it is a bigger project than it appears. Right now I'm pushing around 400HP, but my next step is to put on a blower or a Nitrous system, so I will be up around 550ish. I'd recommend SPEC III or dual-disk McLeod. Hope this helps.
I asked the same question the other day to a guy that races corvettes and he said the centerforce was a great clutch for the C5s. There are three different types to choose from depending on what you are going to use it for. Probally wouldnt hurt to check it out. :steering:
