Take off the MAF and insert a needle nose pliers into the screen and twist. This will cause it to break away from the inside of the housing and come out. It destroys the screen, but it comes right out. I have never seen one removed in one piece.
Make sure you really want to do this, as it is irreversable. Why not buy an after-market MAF housing to see if your car will run the way you want, or to see if there is any benefit, without destroying your MAF? I think you will find there is VERY little effect, and possible problems involved.
I removed my screens a couple of months ago -- absolutely no problems. At the same time I installed a Vortech cold air system, Haltech CF air bridge with coupler, Hypertech programmer, Bassani X-pipe and Borla Stingers, so I can't say whether removing the screens added any power. I can tell you though that overall now my car feels a bit more responsive -- it moves out right smartly! :yesnod:

This is not destroying the MAF. All you are doing is removing the screen. GM did this in 2002 and on the Z06, so it can't be a bad thing. No, you can't replace it, but it doesn't hurt it. I never had a single code or anything pop up. I did notice a little better throttle response but who knows.
I removed mine way back in may of 02. And autotapped the car before and after. I saw more timing and more grams per second of air than before a good mod IMHO. I also have this done to my 96 impala ss.
I marked the side then took the assembly apart first so the sensors wouldn't be damaged; the screen can then be knocked out with a hammer handle and the opening smoothed.
I used a razor knife to work it out after removing the MAF; it took some time but I feel I could re-install it if I wanted to. I had no problems and for added insurance use the computer re-learn process. :chevy
The only reason the C5 has the screens, is because the MAF is shared with the truck line. The trucks MAFs are positioned in a way that the air flow is very turbulent, and the screen is used to help with laminar airflow. John Juriga, GM Powertrain chief, said it wasnt needed for the C5, and since there was nothing negative about not having it in a C5, they took the screen out for the needed improvment of airflow for the 405 Z06.
I cut mine out a long time ago on my 01. And ran screenless maf ends when I had my 2000. No issues whatsoever for 1000's of miles on both. The peak HP increase is going to be extremely small on stock motors, but all the little things add up!
