Recline lever stem issues

Default Recline lever stem issues
Changed the seat covers on my 01. Now my Seat Recline Lever will not clip down to the stem. I have unscrewed and screwed the stem and cable mechanism 10 times and it will not stick out any further to get the metal clip in the slots on the stem. I have done this before with no issues any ideas on how to get a stubborn stem and handle to clip together?

It’s been so long since I had my levers off I’ve forgotten the specifics — it’s the normal GM wire half ring clip, yes?

I had to cut away some of the (new) seat foam when I replaced mine. Took a few tries.
