Default Thermostat.

I know this has been beat to death but i justbpulled my thermostat. This thermostat and the new one i planed on putting in do not sit in the water pump flush. They need to be pushed in a bit before sitting flush to water pump. Is this normal? The tstat mentioned is the 2 bolt and i see they have the 3 bolt stats with a dog leg kind of deal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

No info in your profile what year you have.

The thermostat does not go in the water pump. Depending on the year and/or if you have already replaced the pump, you either have a one piece thermostat housing assembly, or you have a two piece thermostat and housing(thermostat goes in the housing). I have never seen a 3 bolt thermostat housing for an LS1/2/6.

Perhaps take a picture of what you are struggling with.

Its a 01 base. Im unsure if the pump has been replaced the thermostat i pulled is a 2 piece but like i mentioned the thermostat is semi loaded when bolted to waterpump. Which would mean its always semi open. Do i need the 3 bolt dog leg tstat, is the 3 bolt tstat non removable from housing? Will take pics tommorow thanks in advamce for any response.

Okay so i pulled a 04 to present thermostat out. I suppose the old style would not fit. My concern is still that the thermostat spring is being loaded when installed, not much maybe a quarter inch but still it means it is always partially open. I might just get the dog let thermostat and see if that fits. Unless there is a way to check original pump without digging into engine.

No idea what you mean. You can identify early from later model pumps by the pump flange thickness.
