New Here (continued)
New to the forum, introduced myself in general and the Saga continues.
Managed a few issues thus far and now we're continuing to unfurl some issues, with my late fathers C5.
1) AC thought I got lucky on a charge, after 18 hours Ac still worked. 3 days later we've got a flashing light and no cold air. So.. leak appears to be the compressor. Sounds like quite the feat but one of those is on the way.
2) New Wheels! Fitted c6 wheels and rubber to the c5 with some 20 mm hub centric spacers. looks good (pics below)
3) Removing the wheels and jacking the car up, the Sway bar bushing bracket, was revealed to be broken clean off. I'm hunting for one of those right now with little luck.
4) all the sway bar links are trash.. 4 new sway bars coming up. along with pads and rotors.
5) radio was intended to be upgraded to the pioneer 6.8 inch, but for now with the suspension and AC issues.. That'll have to wait. casette to bluetooth item was order for 20 cad off ebay - might work?
If anyone has some info on a sway bar bushing bracket - I'm in eastern Canada, and looking to get it on the road ASAP I'll be calling a bone yard tomorrow but in the meantime, dare I try amazon?
pics below!
up on the jack.. there was a paper thin gap up front.

So today was a day of much learning.
After some rock auto purchases, to equip myself with a new AC compressor, evaporator, Orfice tube etc, 4 new swaybar links, (and still awaiting Pads/Rotors.) We started into the job of replacing that compressor. I opted not to remove the waterpump and decided the exhaust headers seemed a bit more tactical. Well I couldn't have been more wrong.
The start of the day went well, removing the manifold and storing the bolts for later replacement, I soon had the top close coils, ignition wires and spark plugs all removed. Yeah. whats next.. the Flange studs. Now I've considered myself a gathering of "the mean" youtube information. What enough of it, take the best parts from each person write it down. I came prepared torque measurements, equipment - tool list. I was ready. Until I started to twist those flange bolts. I sprayed them down with knock er loose - and waited. and Waited, they looked a little rusty but my progress so far had been easy. I never considered myself strong enough to crack a stud. Yeah.. All three snapped off. After the first one. I kept telling myself the lie of - well maybe that one was bad. I'd estimate the force I put on it, maybe 20 ft lbs.
Anyways that through a wrench I decided to finish extracting the exhaust header, then proceed to town to get a new set of bolts, and a gasket. Because MINE WAS SHOT.
well.. Crapola
Well no use crying over it.. I now have to learn to extra broken studs.. HEAT. I see HEAT in my future. But after that wrench in the day by 15:00 I had yet to start on the the compressor.
God it loose but the AC line was really in the way, so I released it from the evaporator, it was able to fold back on the flexible hose and out with the old and in with the new. Bingo, Exact fit. little bit of up and down on the lift to get the positioning right with the bottom two bolts, and some tetris to get the electrical back in. Then then I did the evaporator/dryer. GOSH DARN TIGHT LOCATION - I swear I spent a half hour trying to push that connector hose that follows the firewall back. Finally managed to get some room. Channel locks weren't the tool for the job there, just a plumbers wrench. Slide in the new one, positioned and let it sit there as I did the O rings, greased them and got them into the positiong, and the Orifice tube. When I started all this..
in the words of my people "this was well blessed"
I didn't think I needed an orifice tube. Not at all. well they say a picture says a thousand words.
EWW.
New ones in
I started into the sway bar links, as I have a friend who's slightly more knowledgeable than I helping me tacking those broken studs. but after a 10-18:00 I was spent, cleaned up the shop - grabbed a bud, mildly cursed some at those broken studs, and decided to get cracking tomorrow. Rock autos brakes and rotors are still not updated, so their lost in America for a bit. But I have lots of stuff to carry on.
Update on the sway bar bushing bracket. Couldn't track one down locally so I ordered a pair off eBay - July 2.. So I just happened to discuss this with a neighbor and that neighbor pointed me to another, who just happens to be restoring a 67 C2 - and it's mint. Long story short, Brian helped a fella out, and welded the previous bracket as a temp until the replacement gets in.
Next in line is:
Finish the sway bar links, - torque down the compressor - its currently snugly, replace the condenser while I'm there. Ignition wires and spark plugs looked terrible so, add that to the list. Once she gets her exhaust manifold back on, and buttoned up. I'll vac it down, and then recharge the system.
Heh.. 5 bucks as soon as its all sorted.
Brakes and rotors will land on my door. - I just want to drive the GD thing.
All's well ends well.

p.s. I probably should replace those belts while I'm there.
my bad.. I'll read the room and try to find another place for it all.
here's what inspired it:
Anyways.. carrying on with the tech questions.
The air box is a Vortex Air ram with a clear casing, It has a different MAP connection and there appears to be a pin or linkage coming from what I believe is the throttle body from just above the driver side engine cover, down to the air box. This stopped me full stop on the new condenser. so I'll have pictures later today to post regarding trying to find out what that is and how to safely disconnect it. its more so the pin and cold air intake.
secondly I got the studs out, the manifold is back in and tightened to 18 ft lbs. on initial start however I'm getting vapors and a smell from the right hand side. I'm hoping its the lubricant burning off, but I'm going to loosen the manifold and flange and make sure everything is seated right and torqued down to 18 ft lbs. fingers crossed there isn't a more serious exhaust leak.
So I'd appreciate some insight on the manifold if there is any tips and tricks there other than re-seating and a retorque and any thoughts on the airbox but I imagine pictures will speak more so. standby.
