I love tools. I could go walk around Harbor Freight for hours looking at stuff. I am planning to use the C5 for SICKWEEK next year and started looking at how I can carry my tires and tools needed. I settled on a rack to carry the race tires and my 1.5 ton aluminum floor jack and use the inside storage for tools and 2 small bags for me and the crew chief! Luckily she is a low maint girl and doesn't need a bunch of stuff, she's a keeper!
I was looking at how much stuff I would need to carry and jack stands take a lot of room. Then I came across this great idea, the Jack Rod. Once you jack up the car, insert this and release the pressure on the jack, now you are using mechanical force to hold the car up and not relying on hydraulic force to hold the weight of the car. Basically turns the jack into a jack stand. Awesome idea and will save a lot of space and time! Anywhere I can save space is a welcomed thing, plus I love stuff like this.

It is a great supplement to the floor jack, but no replacement for jackstands. Either way, if you are underneath the car, you want more than one point of contact holding it up.
Agree, if I were going to be under the car working on it, yeah I would want jack stands but for tire changes? One side at a time, I think this will be perfect and provide a little protection of not having to worry about the jack failing and dropping the car.
Terrible idea.
That 'axle' running between the front wheels has not been tested for any specific carrying capacity.
It would have been better if the device had a pad that sits on the ground and possibly just anchored to the 'axle' to prevent forward/backward movement.

Ya know, there are too many people as it is. Someone comes up with an idea to thin out the population, and you poo-poo it. Come on man, let nature take it's course.

That's a good observation! They do make one for the "steamroller" type of jacks. Might be safer.
IF the jack ever collapsed when not using such a part, the car will collapse down onto the jack and the puck themselves at the jack point in the frame. The other three tires and suspension points will hold most of the weight of the car before touching down and prevent a full force impact. The exposed brake rotor or base of the ball joint may never hit the pavement depending on the jack body height when in the down position. And if they did they are remarkably resilient pieces of metal attached to the suspension which will cushion the chassis itself.
If weight is the issue with ignoring stands, some big blocks of wood work great. The weight is probably equal in the end, but out in the world on uneven surfaces sometimes a custom cut log is a lifesaver. Or at least inspires more confidence than using the partially welded big store stands. If it need to do double duty, there are all sorts of options for attachments or cuts to it to accommodate the rest of your kit in the trunk.
Do you have a portable compressor for the tires? Or how fast are you running that you need to swap tires and not just spend the week on some 200tw radials / dr? That's sort of the beauty of the Corvette to me in Sickweek. Unless you have turned it up to 11, you can make the power while enjoying a lot of relative comfort for the week vs many others.

I look forward to cheering you on!
Primarily I am looking to keep the amount of sheet I have to take to a minimum of what I really need. I am thinking I will make a wood block to sit under the cradle ICW this tool in the jack stand. it can double as a stool if I make it right. I do not want to run my MT Street R's between tracks. The roads are all made of crushed shells and other crap, so your soft tires get ate up pretty good. Swapping the 2 tires doesn't take long. When I took the truck changing all 4 sucked and I did run the radials all week, but they were not soft ones like the MT's. Yes I carry a tire pump and a back up. I could carry jack stands, but if I can find a better solution, that's the goal. I am adding a carrier on the rear for the tires and floor jack. Everything else will be carried inside.
