OK so I'm stupid. Got the car in the air, was going to remove the new RLS and compare to the old...got the bolt out and just decided to feel around......the entire issue was the new RLS was not seated flush to the transmission case. Wiggled and pushed and pop...it went all the way in. Tighten bolt, test shifter...back to buttery smooth. Hard to see up in there but it's a good lesson learned.
Note to anybody that finds this thread in the future, make double sure you have the solenoid flush to the case before cranking down the bolt.
