C 5 Power Antenna Issue

C 5 Power Antenna Issue
2004 power antenna is up most of the way up and will not retract even though motor runs for several seconds when car is turned off. I can pull antenna up about three inches to where it is fully extended and motor immediately pulls it back down the same amount pulled up so it does not appear cable is broke. Looking for suggestions other than replace the entire unit.

If it's the original antenna, there's not a cable, rather there's a stiff plastic ribbon with teeth. Think a very thick zip-tie with more pronounced teeth. My guess is that some of these teeth have broken off, and the drive gear can no longer engage. That would be why, when you pull it up 3 inches, the drive gear will engage (you've reached a place with the teeth intact) - but only until it reaches the point on the ribbon with missing teeth. I don't think you have any choice but to replace the whole thing.
