Default P0342 code

hey all, buying a C5. Only issue is P0342 code and some weird noises idling. Also a hiss when shutoff. Is it usually a major repair/issue? Car is perfect cosmetically and everything else that makes it worth it. Or do I stay away?

It could be a few different things, so is it expensive to fix? Depends on who you have fix it and what their rates are and ultimately what it takes to correct the issue. I wouldn't drive that car much or even start it until I got that figured out. That code is for the Cam Shaft sensor, so it could be the sensor, it could be an issue with the wiring or PCM.

I drove it around the parking lot, never above 2000 rpm. Just wanted to test it before I spent money on it. I felt resistance when I tried to rev it. Starts up fine. Good to know. Would you say it’s a dealbreaker?

Depends, are you capable of swapping out a cam sensor? If the sensor is good, then you have to chase either a wiring or PCM issue. I would say "most" of the time it might just need the new cam sensor, but that is a shot in the dark not knowing the actual condition of the car and the wiring etc.

This video is about swapping out one and other stuff

Stay away. Plenty of well maintained c5's out there.
