I took out the assembly because it didn't work most of the time and not at all when the temperature is cold. The outside ratchet paw that has a small spring around it was sticking due to the thick grease and a little dirt; this kept the assembly from tightening up. After cleaning with solvent and regreasing with Mobil 1 it works better than ever. If the console is removed and the parking brake boot lifted up, the paw can be sprayed with solvent and then light oil to avoid removing the whole thing since the passenger seat must be removed first.
No, if the paw doesn't catch any teeth the cable won't tighten and the parking brakes won't apply; when the handle is pulled back the small paw that is conected to the handle button will make a ratchet sound. The small paw locks the handle in position until the button is pushed but if the large paw sticks, the cable stays loose.
I have a similar intermittent problem on mine also, seems like if I lift up while pulling it works fine, if i don't , handle pulls back but brake stays disengaged. Actual brake in the rear is a mini drum type, that has star wheel self adjusters, Will adjust automatically by backing the car and engaging the e-brake...How much trouble was it to get to the front pawls nd clean them up...
Just take off the console and remove the two boot nuts; lift the boot and the paws will be toward the front of the assembly. I would clean them both since they are on the same rivet.
