I will be installing a Z06 cat back system. Anyone do this and/or gut pre-cats and/or add a X-pipe? Any advantages or disadvantages? Whats your opinion? Thanks
I gutted my pre-cats when I installed my rear gears and torque converter. Definitely changed the tone of the exhaust. Sounds better but definitley loud around the 2500rpm range. I'm sure the exhaust has something to do with the different sound as well. I have the 2 tip Borla Stingers. Still not as bad as the Borla XR-1 system I had on my '99 Vette.
Mean Greens always on top these things!   Anyway from what I've read you lose torque but possibly gain a few Hp but you'll smell the fuel badly out the tailpipes. :p:
My .02 :D I would have an exhaust shop cut them out and repace with straight pipe. When you gut the cat it leaves a chamber in the pipe for gas to turbulate. It can also make a tinging sound while driving. The catalyst core straightens the air. When you remove it you get turbulence. Repeating myself I will stop :seeya
Thanks for the info. Sounds like the thing to do is to gut those babies. Since I will have the whole exhaust system off the car, what would a X-pipe do with this set-up?
Leave the cats alone. At your power level and up to 400 (or so) rwhp the stock cats aren't a significant restriction. So no advantages. The disadvantages mount up: Bad smells, noise, federal offense for tampering, smog certification down the road, and why add to the pollution problem with no gains?

We're talking about the pre-cats not the main cats. GM only used them for a couple of years and then eliminated them. They are for cold start emissions only. All smog checks are done hot so that won't be a problem.
