Default Alternator Replacement
Hey guys, my car is throwing a code for a charge system fault, and the shop I took it to said I need a new alternator and belt. They also quoted me $850, so I will handle this myself. Before I buy parts, I want to ensure I get the right ones, because I've noticed that alternators can be finicky with the C5. My car is a 1999 automatic, and I understand that this 110 amp alternator will work, but I want to confirm.

It shows the correct cross reference for the 97-2000 alternator - p/n 10246634. Did they review how the reached the diagnosis with you? Which code do you have?

$850 for a new alternator??? Guessing alternator is $350-$400.....So $450-$500 for labor??It takes me 20 minutes to 1/2 hour to R&R the alternator. Is Stevie Wonder changing the alternator???

Lol, that's what I'm saying. I asked them for a price breakdown, and they said they were going to order a ~$650 alternator, then a ~$50 belt, and the rest is labor. I'm just going to go ahead and order the one I linked.

You might save a lot of money having the old alternator checked at a shop that rebuilds them, it might only need a set of brushes or a new regulator.
