Nothing magic inside a C5 diff.
If you were building diffs all day from piles of new parts, the setup tools would sure make that easier.
But if you're swapping gears or just changing bearings on a one-off job, care and patience are the important tools.
I've done a few for myself... they took forever, and I got to stink like 90wt the whole time.

None of the shops I worked for would do one, and I wouldn't take one on for a customer. Surefire money loser!
It is a specialty. Best to send them out.

That was my point to the OP, do not allow the local shop to attempt repairing it unless they have the J-44678 tool set.

Or... if they build diffs regularly in-house.
Even with the special tools, they'd lose their asses on a one-off.

Yes, check the LSD function. If it's failed, then take it apart and look.
If not, put fresh fluid in it. Does it make noise? No? Good to go.
Yes?
Well crap, I gambled $30 worth of fluid against the cost of a new diff.

As for needing all of the GM special tools to properly set up the R&P... No. But take it to a shop that specializes in diffs!
Most shops won't touch one, and send them out anyway. It's a specialty, and unless you do them often, it's a great way to lose money.
A 4x4 shop is a good place to start. They swap gears regularly, and if they don't build them, at least they'll know who does.
I have never noticed a sound or problem, but the car is loud, either the BOV is making noise, or the exhaust starts coming on, so not sure I would hear anything unless really bad.
I have new fluid in it, and I asked about driving it, and he said probably fine. I'm thinking it will only get worse, and may create a larger problem in time.
Maybe I drive it some, and then take it in and if more sludge, I have them open it up, but if nothing new, I keep driving it, and periodically check and have fluid changed?
Test LSD, so jack up rear, and both wheels should spin in same direction, correct? If bad, one wheel won't spin?

This shows the process. If a guy has set up gears before, you could do this yourself.
Thanks, I actually already watched that one, found by watching same guy wrestle the diff out in his garage. I'm not going to attempt.

I got you

Perhaps I should have clarified, though, you can apply that torque to a lug nut or axle nut.
