Hey! Recently bought an 2001 vette. Latley it has been acting weird, starts fine in the mornings. And idles until you blip the throttle. Then It will drop to 400 and act like it wants to die. After a few minutes it will sporadically start surging from 400-700, and sometimes it will die.
When it dies i have to hold the throttle open a bit to keep it running, and if I let off it completely shuts off. I put a used throttle body and a maf on it as of today. I need to know all the things that can cause this so I can figure it out. It has 55psi of fuel pressure when running.
A “used” TB and MAF sensor can cause this…did you purchase them on EBay ??…you need to be checking live data with a scan tool to see why it’s shutting off instead of just throwing parts at it…with bad parts you may building in more problems…the MAF sensor should be no less than 5.7 grams/second at idle with the engine warmed up with no loads…MAP sensor should be reading 14.7 or 101 kPa with key on engine off if you are at sea level.

The maf is a brand new Delphi one from napa. And the throttle body was from a junkyard

Every part you install has to be tested…you never assume they are good…if this testing is over your head seek out an auto diagnostic shop…many things can cause stalling.

How do I test them? This is my first vette. Im a classic car guy, and all this is new too me

Being you are a classic car guy and this is new to you this will be impossible for you to diagnose…you need to know how to test electrical circuits and how the sensors in these cars interact with each other and how they work and how to interpret live data from a scan tool…if you know what a labscope is having one to use is critical…you will just waste time and money shotgunning parts…seek a professional diagnostician.

You possibly compounded your problem by replacing the parts, with condition unknown parts. Put the original parts back in, and troubleshoot from there.
Start simple. Pull your codes from the DIC and post them here.

I tell all people who wants to buy a c5 is take an automotive electronics and mechanics class because it will save you 1000's of dollars in the long run with these cars.n I hope you have deep pockets. This is typical with new used c5's. Consent new buyers come on here with problems after they buy a c5. Best for you is get on the internet get some DVm and scan tools and start learning, Ton of testing with all the typical all issues with the c5 platform. Coming on here and asking how to teat is not the answer you have to do all the leg work. Welcome to hell if you bought a problematic c5 which its seems you started in the wrong direction. Codes ????
Start by figuring out what codes are present. Recording them with your phone will save you from having to step through them again and again while you write them down.
Everyone who has posted so far is correct. You really should have some type of scan tool to work on anything 1996 and newer. Scan tools were still relevant on OBD1 stuff. Data streams help the diagnostic process.
I agree with Lucky put the old stuff back on and try to diagnose the problem. Most Throttle body and MAF issues will set a code but not always. Sounds like the parts did not fix your issue anyway.
A few simple things you can do that you would do on classic cars:
Clean the throttle plate and MAF.
Check for Vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and behind the MAF. Carb/Brake cleaner whatever your chemical of choice is. Don't burn your car down.
Check the plugs and wires.
New parts do not mean the part is good. I have installed plenty of bad new parts and had to redo jobs because of it.
You said you just got the car what have you checked over? Is there a check engine light?

If you are going to troubleshoot this vehicle yourself, you should have good quality digital multi-meter, a bi-directional scan tool, and the factory service manual (FSM) at a minimum. If you cannot obtain the FSM, an ALL DATA DIY account is a good option.
