Default Shift box adjustment on c5 zo6

Recently got a 2002 c5 zo6 and it had some “notchy” shifting. Decided to do this realignment before i drop the trans. I’m currently stuck on the neutral lock pin, it just won’t go down and I know better than to beat on it. Any advice? It’s currently soaking in penetrating oil.

Why would you drop the trans? When was the last fluid change?
Is it a stock shifter?
Why not just remove the shifter from the box so you can check the hole alignment ?

it sometimes spits me out of second and reverse and is notchy into third, the problem with second gear popped up within this last two weeks and I haven’t been driving it since it happened. I figured if the alignment doesn’t work then it has to be the synchros or something internal. Last fluid change was 2,000 miles ago, but not performed by me, might be a good idea to see if it was done right. It is an aftermarket shifter. If it won’t throw everything out of harmony by removing the shifter then I will try it when I get home. I’m sure I sound dumb lol but I’m pretty new to this so I just wanted to make sure I wont mess anything up before I take it apart more.

I just asked about the fluid because a fluid change can make a dramatic improvement in shifting, especially with that notchy sensation. It sounds like the shifter is just out of alignment, and I have never seen a neutral pin frozen/corroded where it would not move....but I do not know what kind of assembly you have there. Either way, everything has to be loosened up, I was just giving you one possible path for investigation. As long as you have the trans in neutral, just follow the procedure knowing that the rod clamp will have to be loosened first. Then you can evaluate the shifter assembly. Service manual procedure attached below.

Is there a particular trans fluid you recommend to be the smoothest? I finished the alignment and it did make it so much better, but 2nd and 3rd are just a little notchy still. Have also been told to install the “anti venom mod” for that.

That is a completely subjective discussion. I have always just used what was recommended per the manual. Sounds like you are well on your way to better shifting.

What after market shifter do you have? I am experiencing similar issue with an older model mgw short shifter. My second doesn’t kick me out but sometimes doesn’t want to go in smooth. Reverse does at times not want to go in. I did the antivenom mod which is cheap and simple and seemed to smooth it out a little and I thought it fixed my hard reverse issue but came back. I also had Chevy replace transmission fluid recently too. I don’t have the alignment tool for the mgw short shifter so I was wondering if you had the same shifter to see how you aligned it.

What alignment tool are you referring to?

Well i guess the question is where is the alignment tool available, because I was under the assumption they were only available with the shifter since I didn’t see them on mgw website and someone told me mgw doesn’t sell the individually. Other than that I was curious what shifter the person who posted this had?

No doubt. It's just, that was my version 1 which I wasn't overly thrilled with, thus leading me to design (and upload) a V2.

Well I got my alignment tool. Took off the mgw short shifter and I guess the first gen used the original shifter box. Either way I aligned the shifter and now seems to get into reverse easier. Only thing now it feels notchy through shifts. I may take the anti-venom mod out now and try it. I put it in assuming it didn’t have the stock shifter box.
